I was reading an article this past weekend about Intellectual Hospitality. It struck me as interesting and timely. The idea is that we can disagree with eachother but that we should always seek to understand eachother's position. That it leads to more civilized discourse. A recent post on patients asking nurses to pray with them demonstrated this nicely. There were many opinions but the general tone was pretty civilized.

We live in a culture of highly polarized beliefs and aeem all to willing to engage in fighting words. Opinions are like rectums in that everybody has one. It is really so hard to try to see another's point of view.

I think it's an idea whose time has come. We live in an age where emotion trumps logic. You can say the most ridiculous thing, but with a fervent display of emotion, it's considered credible. It doesn't even help to be willing to listen to the other person's point of view because often they can't articulate it. Just layer on some more emotion and maybe some name-calling for good measure.

Intellectual Hospitality will have a hard time existing without intellect. Maybe we all need the prerequisite: Civil Discourse.

Interesting term. I would love to read the article, if you can link to it.

I am not sure if it's online - It was in the Azusa Pacific University Magazine so It must be in their on-line library. I 'll try to link it later I am finishing an assignment this am.
