I love this doctor!

Recently had a patient with a long history of IV drug use, alcohol abuse, etc... Came to us WILD from the hosptial. We finally got his restlessness under control, then his brother came in pounding his chest. "I am a doctor. I do not want my brother chemically restrained. You can physically restrain him, but that is it. Turn down the pumps NOW!" (Brother was still awake enough to turn himself over in bed and communicate, he wasn't snowed, just calm.) Luckily, our medical director was in the house. This was his response:

I understand your concerns of sedation. However, we do not physically restrain our patients. I do feel, however, we are managing his symptoms appropriately. If you don't agree I will be more than happy to discharge him. Now, would you like us to have the hosptial bed sent to your mom's house tonight so that it is there when he gets home? It will take us a little while to wean him off these meds....

Needless to say, the whole tune changed. LOL! I love our medical director.

It would be wonderful if more doctors had the same level of tact, wit, and guts as your medical director. Kudos to him!

we can certainly use more of him, especially in hospice.

it drives me nuts when families act as directors, and doctors et al, typically support them.

this indeed, is an isolated yet refreshing event.:balloons:

I have to deal with a doc that gets calls from family members of our LTC residents with demands regarding meds,tx. etc.He just calls us and gives the orders for whatever the family wants. It gets really interesting when the family member is not DPOA and the doc is not aware or they live 1,000 miles away and have not seen "momma" in 6 years.Or it's not even a family member but the s.o. of one. The DOH got us on this a few years ago-but it continues.Why he doesn't tell them to call the home and speak to the charge nurses I just don't know...It's so freaking frustrating...
