I Fear I won't get into nursing School

I went to a private university my GPA was a 2.45 for the first year, now I currently go to a Community college, my first semester GPA was a 3.87. I'm going on my second semester at the CC my overall GPA is a 3.06.

I know I have a very low GPA, how can I raise my GPA? I still need to take Anatomy, Physiology, Microbio and pathphysio. So far all my GEs that I've taken at my CC I've gotten all As, but because of my previous school GPA its bringing me down. What should I do?

I'm wanting to go to either CSUB, CSULB, CSUN, or CSUF. I don't think my grades even qualify. What should I do!?!

You have to keep trying, who knows you might get in. But one thing is for sure you need to broaden your selections, because even with perfect GPA's not is everyone guaranteed to get in. But do not give up, keep trying and you will get there!

Don't rule out the option of ADN at a community college. You can apply to universities for BSN afterwards.

Taking those and doing well will inch your GPA up little by little. Be aware, many colleges only consider the cumulative GPA of the courses that actually apply to the nursing degree. So if you took underwater basket weaving and managed to do poorly, it won't matter all that much. Good luck.

I'm assuming that you're in California? But I had a similar situation.. I ended up with a low GPA, I think it was somewhere close to a 2.5, and then I went to a local community college, and finished up my pre reqs and ended up with a 3.3 or something.. but I made sure I did well in my pre req classes and I did well on the entrance tests... don't worry about that right now.. Just take it one step at a time.. Atleast you're on the road to achieving your goal of being a nurse!!!!

The past is the past.. use it as a reminder to keep you on track.. not as an excuse to not do your best!!!

I was in your same boat. I went to CSUB, had a really crappy gpa, then a few years later went back to a CC and graduated with a 3.8. I did get into San Diego state, but getting into the nursing program there was still an unknown. My wish would have been to get into that program, but I got married to a navy guy and moved to Virginia in 2008, where I got into a private ADN program with no waitlist. and now I'm an RN. There was another girl in our class that moved from Ca to here. Maybe u should consider moving for your ADN if u think ur gpa is going to be a problem.

I'm in the same boat as you right now, my current GPA is exactly a 3.0 =(. I know there are a few schools you accept students based off a point system, so I would recommend getting A's on all pre-req's because you will get higher points. And if you could work in a hospital or volunteer that could really help too. Also, really study for the TEAS test! =)

I am sort of in the same boat. I went to a community college and did very very poorly at first because I didn't know what I wanted to do, and I didn't really try very hard. Now that I have decided that I want to be a nurse, I regret not trying to so hard. Some Universities will give you a bump up on your GPA if you take you pre-reqs there. So just check different places out. Don't get discouraged. Take things one day at a time, make check lists... etc. :D You will do great!

you just need to be realistic, if your grades aren't all that, there are plenty of nursing schools out there, find those that fit you (gpa, etc).

as others have stated, getting an adn through a cc works just fine.

frankly, a bachelors degree in nursing (bsn) is overkill for many nurses, they never get a higher degree and don't have what it takes to move up the ladder. in the area i'm in adn & bsn nurses get paid the same for the same jobs. there doesn't seem to be much of an advantage in advancement either for bsn's, i've seen diploma, adn and bsn nurses move up the ladder, had less to do with how they became a rn and more to do with their personality and how they're a rn.

msn's have a clear advantage moving up the ladder though.

Community college and ADN does not mean GPA can be low. I go to a community college pursuing an ADN and you won't have a prayer of getting in with a GPA less than a 3.8. The waiting list each semester is huge.

gentlywind, that sounds just like my school. They only count the pre-req's they require toward your GPA which is a good thing, but the cutoff was a 3.77 last selection and its going to be higher this year. My guess is 3.8 to 3.9 for next year because they have more people applying each year.

The classes you have not taken yet are the hardest ones at our school. You have all A's so far, Im sure you can keep that up if you try.

Have you checked to see if the CC only considers the pre-req's required? Your GPA could be higher than you figure.
