Update: My second choice finally emailed me for my references Dec 20.

I moved here in July and got lucky with an interview at my #1 choice hospital, SRH, 2 days after I got here. Unfortunately being busy with my move, I had a short prep time for my interview = I interviewed poorly but kept hope alive, didn't apply anywhere else, and got a rejection email after 2 months in September. After that I begrudgingly applied to dialysis and my 2nd choice hospital, WHH. Out of nowhere my #1 choice hospital called me back for another interview. Also, in that same week the dialysis and 2nd choice hospital called me to schedule for an interview. I had all 3 interviews the same week, 2nd choice on a Tuesday, and dialysis phone interview and 1st choice on a Wednesday. I did a better interview prep this time around and got hired at my 1st choice, the dialysis left me a message to schedule a 2nd interview, and got an email from the 2nd choice saying they're interested in me and will be in contact because their start date is in December/January 2025. People in FB kept saying hospitals are slow to respond, so I clung to that and waited patiently. I start orientation in November. From July to November, I was/will have been unemployed/job hunting for 4 months. Why did I get interviews? 1. I can only guess it's bc I have almost 3 years med surg experience, so I'm experienced enough, but not enough to be expensive. 2. Timing. SRH just opened/built a new unit. WHH built a brand new hospital that is set to open Decemberish.

Ya, try private duty pediatric home care. Very low stress. You take care of 1 happy special needs child and the families are very grateful. During my time in pediatric home care, my biggest daily worry was what movie to watch.

I just got hired at a dermatology clinic. I heard about my job at an rn/lpn refresher course from an employee. So i just showed up, dropped my resume because the hiring person wasn't there. Got called in later to come in that afternoon. Short interview and hired on the spot. My previous work experience was 2 yrs of pediatric home care. They said they put an ad in craigslist, which i had seen weeks ago, but since it only had a couple of sentences i dismissed it as a scam. So, just network, look in craigslist and like the other poster said, show up with resume in hand and just ask if a position is available. The worst thing they can say is no and you'll never see them again.

I was in your same boat. I went to CSUB, had a really crappy gpa, then a few years later went back to a CC and graduated with a 3.8. I did get into San Diego state, but getting into the nursing program there was still an unknown. My wish would have been to get into that program, but I got married to a navy guy and moved to Virginia in 2008, where I got into a private ADN program with no waitlist. and now I'm an RN. There was another girl in our class that moved from Ca to here. Maybe u should consider moving for your ADN if u think ur gpa is going to be a problem.

Applied in Oct at mary immac. I called the number and all that they told me was someone was going to contact me in Nov. No phone call yet.

I am going to the MCI RN program in Newport News. All of my gen ed classes that I took at a community college in california transferred to MCI, which were: the math(don't know which one), chemistry, nutrition, english, sociology, and psychology. So, regardless of what school you go to for nursing, it would be safe to take gen ed classes at a CC, which SHOULD transfer anywhere you go.

I heard the maxiscope is exactly like the ultrascope, but without the picture designs and is cheaper.

I love my Ultrascope. I've never owned a littman, so can't compare. I mostly love it cause its so cute!! It does the job, and it's definitely better than the stethoscope that my school gives us. My friends who have tried it have noticed that you don't hear the extraneous noises that come from touching the tubing or bell.

You can totally afford to live in San Diego as a new grad! San Diego has different areas where apartments vary in cost. I lived in Imperial Beach, which was close to 3 hospitals within 10 minutes driving distance. It's a small, beach town with nice and decent neighborhoods. I had a modest 2 bedroom apartment for less than $1000. The beach was less than two miles from my apartment, and Mexico is a 10 minute drive away.

Here's my two cents about the LVN programs. I was trying to go for the RN program at Southwestern college, so I'm not sure about the LVN programs. Southwestern and City college require you to finish prereq's before you can apply. It takes about 1-2 years to finish the prereq's, depending on how motivated you are. Southwestern also requires you to have your CNA license, but City college does not. Southwestern and City college are cheap because they are community colleges. I don't know about the LVN program, but the RN programs at community colleges tell their applicants the waitlist is 2 years, give or take, depending on the number of applicants. So there might be no wait for the LVN program or a shorter wait then the RN program. Other private schools like, Maric and Concorde, are expensive because they can get you into their program with no wait list.

The GI bill DOES pay for pre-req classes, like anatomy, physio, micro, for the nursing major. The GI bill only pays for classes that are needed for your major. So,if you're majoring in nursing, the GI bill won't pay for an accounting class, because you don't need it.

I have to turn in those transcripts from my previous school, because the classes that I did good in, like sociology and speech will still transfer. Thanks for all the replies, I felt so hopeless yesterday of not getting in anywhere.
