for an ADN program or BSN?

Neither ADN nor BSN. I was out of the field for 5 years. Now I want to go back to work at a hospital.

Are you an RN? If so, apply for a job and see what happens. Many hospitals have internships. If you are interested in switching fields, then apply for one of those. 5 years is not a long time.

I was also in the position of being out of the work force for a number of years, and had difficulty obtaining employment. I just got hired in a small hospital in Post Falls, Idaho. I had a lapsed Idaho nursing license. Because I have not worked in a few years, I am working on an Idaho Interim RN Permit with an RN preceptor for 80 supervised hours. My preceptor will fill out an evaluation form about my work and send it to the Idaho BON. They will then re-issue me an Idaho RN license.

I have always maintained active licensure in Washington State. I think that was one of the requirements. Perhaps, you can arrange a preceptorship with a hospital, and do the same as I am doing. The real benefit is that Idaho in a compact state, and I will have access to licensure in the other compact states. Good Luck!

RN's tend to change specialities, so I really don't think it will be a problem. Where have you applied?

Specializes in Emergency Nursing.

Lonestar college (previously North Harris college system) offers an RN refresher course. I think it is through the CE program and is 4 or 6 weeks long. You can look online at their CE course catalogue to find the details.

thank you all for the information. I'll try both: internship and reentry program.
