  1. Hermann Hospital has a nurse refresher course. http://www.memorialhermann.org/careers/nursingcareers/content.aspx?ID=3638
  2. Not sure if this is what you are looking for but below is a link from the Texas Board of Nursing web site. It includes information on how to file a complaint regarding nursing practice. Hope it helps. http://www.bon.state.tx.us/about/complaint.html
  3. For me the only thing about being a electrician I miss are some of the friends that I used to work with. I really do not miss the work at all. I do still keep my state electrical license up to date. These days you never know what is going to happen
  4. Nursing is my 2nd career and I really enjoy being a nurse. I wish I would have gone to nursing school years ago. I was an electrician in my first job and I was laid off from what I thought was going to be a "permanent" job. I could have very easily gone back to work as a construction electrician and made good money but there is no job security with that type of work. Also I really never liked being an electrician. The reason I went into it was that my dad could get me into an electrical apprenticeship program. I needed a job and the pay was supposed to be "good" It's a good example of somebody going into a job just for the money, and not really enjoying what they do. Ironically money is one of the things that attracted me to nursing, but not the only thing. Before making the choice this time I tried to look at the whole picture. It was actually something that had been in the back of my mind for years. My sister and best friend are nurses and I really thought nursing is something that I would enjoy. I was fortunate enough to have a wife that supported my decision and was also able to support our family while I was in nursing school. Nursing school was hard and it was not easy going to school with a family but it was worth it. I now have a job that I love. So my advice is if you really want to be a nurse you need to look at the whole picture. Just because you know others that enjoy nursing it needs to be something that you are going to enjoy. I would talk to your nurse friends get them to explain in detail what nurse's do. If possible try to shadow a nurse at work for a day. If after looking at everything you want to be a nurse I say go for it.
  5. I can tell you that although Methodist hospital in the Houston area has and internship program they will hire new grads and give them an orientation without going through the program. Also UTMB in Galveston will hire new grads also without going through an internship. I am sure there are more opportunities then that but those are two places that I am familiar with. Good Luck. John
  6. Well I just completed our yearly training for my hospital and I can tell you for a fact at our facility we are not allowed to accept cash gifts of any amount. We can however accept small gifts valued less the 50.00
  7. He admited he was wrong cut him a little slack.
  8. Aknottedyarn I just wanted to say that was an excellent post.
  9. Well if I lived in Florida in 1994 there is no way I would have went into nursing. I do understand that you are not going to get rich in nursing but in some parts of the country pay is pretty good and the job is fairly stable. There are a lot of reasons I picked nursing as a 2nd career. The pay was just one reason. Like I said before I have been out of school a year now and while I still have a lot to learn I definitely feel I made a good choice.
  10. I would hope that nursing schools would empty out if they reduced our pay that much. I have been a nurse about a year now and love my job and taking care of my patients but there is no way I would work for 15 and hour. Nursing is my second career and the pay played a major part in my decision to become a nurse. That does not make me a bad nurse by the way. John
  11. Has anybody ever heard of having two MAR's for one patient? On our unit we have an electronic MAR and when medications are entered we have to use the providers name who ordered the medications. The problems is on the evenings and weekends the providers we have on call are not in our electronic MAR so the medications cannot be entered so we use a handwritten MAR's until our regular providers can review the medications and determine if they are going to go on the electronic MAR. Our providers work Monday through Friday 7:00am - 10:30pm so if a medication is ordered Friday night we would be using the handwritten MAR for that specific medication until Monday morning. This seems like it is just asking for a med error, and I really do not like it. What do you think? Also the providers we have on call change so often that they do not want to give them the training so they can be put in the electronic MAR.
  12. I am currently an RN and work 12 hour shifts. I make it a point to always take my lunch break. From time to time I might take my lunch break a little late but I have always taken it. As long as they do not pay for my lunch break there will always be time. When I was in school we got 30 minute breaks.
  13. I work as a nurse in the Texas Department of Corrections and a sandwich is often refered to as a "johnnie". I am not sure why though. John
  14. I'd be curious as to what the pass rate is now for first time takers, I'd imagine that it has dropped. Its still about 87% https://www.ncsbn.org/Table_of_Pass_Rates_2008.pdf
  15. In my opinion I would say that finishing with 75 questions is a good sign. The pass rate for first time test takers is around 87% according to NCSBN https://www.ncsbn.org/06_02_05_NCLEX_RN_Fact.pdf . I would really like to know what the pass rate is for students finishing at 75 questions. I would bet money that it is even higher. I know that my class had over 100 students and nobody that finished with 75 questions failed the NCLEX.
