My first daughter was 8months, second 10months and third 14months on breast milk. My last 2 daughters did not want baby formula so it was quite hard weaning them. I think one can breastfeed as long as it is possible. The benefits cannot be overemphasized.

I'm grateful I was able to nurse them all until they weaned themselves... 1st son was ready at 15 months, but momma was definitely not ready, LOL. I cried for weeks afterward. He started on a cup at 8-9 months old with regular milk- I didn't know any better at the time, but still nursed frequently until at least a year and then tapered off. The other 2 never had cows milk to well after their 1st birthday. #2 would have nursed longer but I was pregnant with #3 and I started producing colostrum. I guess he got tired of not getting any milk for his efforts.
None had formula, with the exception of #1, and he only had it in the hospital against my wishes... That hospital was not as supportive of breastfeeding in 1982 as the hospital where I had my 2 other boys, in 1987 and 1990.

First child 1 month
2nd 6 months-quit because I found it difficult to pump at work - I had to pump in clean work room - no electricity to bathrooms-I had to go to punch out off the unit then pump on unit then punch back in- plus the stress at work made it difficult for me to relax

#1 2 years and 10 months.. I had to wean him because I was3 months pregnant . It was quite a battle to convince him to give it up.When his brother came along he looked longingly while his brother nursed.
#2 almost 4 years. In the end it was a bedtime /comfort thing. He would have kept up longer but my Gran found out and I believed shamed us both into giving it up.

Ds#1 - I was never able to nurse, but did pump the entire 10 weeks he lived.
Dd - 16 months (she abruptly weaned when I became pregnant again).
Ds#2 - He's still nursing and is 27 months.
