EC CPNE workshop
Tom, I passed the CPNE on the first try in March of this year. I did not attend any CPNE workshops(and yes these private workshops are put on by former students). What I did was to set up lab stations to mimic the exact ones in the carjack (aka study guide) I carved a wound from a piece of styrofoam and lined it with red and yellow clay to mimic a wound bed. I had IV bags that I added food coloring to to count drip rates accurately hanging in my dining room at all times.I had a heplock taped to a towel for the IV push section. The towel was absorbant. I had a tall plastic cup for my "sharps" and would follow through discarding the syringe appropriately every single time.Place ID bands on your stations so you get used to doing the check everytime. Incorporate as much into your daily work practice as you can. I do recomment ECs careplanning conference. It put everything in perspective for me as far as what was expected and I got feedback from the EC staff on actual careplans and was able to review other students careplans, successful as well as mistakes. Above all learn to control your nerves. Repeat to yourself that you are a calm confident nurse who is prepared. Be prepared! Smile and BREATHE. Best of luck! Yvonne Message me with any questions

the Excelsior wait
I became CPNE eligible at the end of December and had a date less than two months from then. From what I have heard New York sites have the most availability and if you are willing to take a cancellation date and travel on the spur of the moment, you can test quite quickly.I wished I could have taken the NCLEX right away after the CPNE but realized I did need the time to decompress and gather anew study stategy...Best of luck!

Would you let your hospital treat your loved one?
My facility is the ONLY local hospital I would allow my children to be seen at.

Drawing blood through a Saline Lock??
In our ED some do draw blood off a just initiated IV before the J loop or adapter is placed. I do not ,as frequently the blood sample will hemolyze and the patient will be re stuck. I also adhere to the mantra that I will not risk an IV site for the sake of a blood draw. There are many more sites suitable for a venipuncture vs IV start on most folks.

Rules for the ER (long)
I want to add this to the list posted in the waiting area: Yes the nurse will be kind as possible to you while you are here, however please refrain from chasing her and calling her name at the top of your lungs when you see said nurse in Wegmans. She is NOT your friend, free dispenser of advise or missing you or caring in anyway how that sebaceous cyst turned out.

Advice for RNs who are still wet behind the ears
I agree that staying ore than 20 minutes after the end of shift to chart indicates a need to look at time management especially if everyone else is gone on the dot.I found that I never took a break and ended up watching other nurses patient's while they ate and smoked. Feel free to say NO!YOUR refueling of your energy and brain makes you a better nurse! If you run yourself ragged 1) you end up resentful 2)you are more prone to errors 3) yours skills and efficiency deteriorates. Good luck

Hourly Rate For LPNS
LPNs in the Upstate NY area make $10- $17/hour dependant upon experience and facility and your bargaining skills. When I passed my RN NCLEX earlier this year I was making $14.94 + charge pay+ shift differential which landed me in the $19 range. Now that I have the RN my base is $18.10 in the ED which rather sucks.

LPN Needing Advice About RN thru Excelsior!
I got my RN through Excelsior this year. If you are disciplined and a solid learner you CAN do it! Go to Excelsior.edu for information.A phone number is on the site. They can answer specific questions about certain states. Please be aware that there are publishing companies who will charge alot of money for "study systems" Alot of this material you can get cheaper elsewhere and even free from Excelsior! I begged borrowed or bought from Ebay.As with alot of college classes, the newer editions really do not have much different material than the cheaper older versions.good luck

Thank you's - memorable ones you've received?
It seems that a Thank You appears whenever sorely needed. There are a few that stick in my memory> I received a hand written letter and 50 pounds of potatoes on the unit on week after taking care of a potato farmer. The other nurses teased me for a spell and called me "spud",but I thought of the effort it took to get those to me and had to smile. Another patient was a Iranian who was very particular, hypergermophobic and traditional in views. Noone else wanted to deal with his time consuming requests , but I was interested in his culture and volunteered.Months later who do I see but this man and family and he flags me down in a restaurant to announce to everyone that I must be the most patient soul alive. I was blushing but glowing at the same time! Our whole 2nd shift was out for an afterwork drink when a round was bought for everyone.None of us had made the gesture. Mystery was solved when minutes later a woman approached to tell us she was in an MVI and we were the first people she saw when sshe awoke from a coma. I too love the goodies and homemade treats that come my way time to time.

I left the Pearson Vue testing cener less than 45 minutes after I began totally bewildered . I got the blue screen of death at 75. Some of the questions I was just thinking .."are you kidding me??!!!!"The priorty questions were not clear cut and I seemed to get them repeatedly! I was ill the whole day and yesterday I got results that I PASSED. Have faith and do not beat yourself up.Pass or fail...life has not come to an end.....as the song by American Rejects says....."MOVE ALONG" keep progressing and ptting one foot in front of another until you are out of the bad part of life you are experiencing.
