How is drug testing done at your facility?

Hi, I am just curious how drug testing is performed at your job facility? Does someone go into the room with you? How do random tests work? Does someone accompany you to the lab? Are they done at your facility, or do they send you to another facility?

I'm curious because I've been using marijuana edibles daily (except for clinical days of course) throughout nursing school in order to cope with the stress, to sleep, and to focus on studying. I've done very well in nursing school, and now it's time to search for a job. Let me be clear, I do not intend to work under the influence, and I never have. On clinical days, I simply eat a quarter of a cookie after dinner (after clinical hours have ended) in order to wind down and sleep well. And on other days, I eat a quarter of a cookie after I've attended to my daily responsibilities. I do not drink alcohol, and I will never take prescription narcotics unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY (which is, hopefully, never).

In the past, I have been able to use artificial urine in order to pass drug tests, but that was because I was alone in the bathroom. Which is why I ask, will someone be in the room with me?

As a precaution, I have quit my habit while I job search, and I intend on using my own (clean) urine for my pre-employment drug screen because I'm not playing with my career/license like that. But, I plan to pick my habit back up after I learn the inner workings of my facility's drug testing procedures, because anxiolytics simply aren't an option. I'm just curious, and planning ahead. Rest easy, if isn't a possibility, I will do without.

Seriously.

OP, you've been playing with fire long enough. This shouldn't even be a damn question. I'll take my anxiolytic and my career over the possibilities you could be facing.

You will not be able to pass a drug test using artificial urine in the real nursing world. Most of my employers didn't do pre-employment drug tests but the one that did, the drug testing facility didn't let you bring ANYTHING into the bathroom with you. No coat, no purse, nothing. They put blue dye in the toilet and told you not to flush and they tested the temperature of the sample as soon as you produced it.

Sorry, marijuana use is pretty incompatible with nursing.

I can't believe OP would even think to Use fake urine for a drug screen let alone pass with it and try doing it AGAIN. It demonstrates a very clear lack of integrity.

Honestly, I'm impressed the OP fessed up to doing such a thing, and in a public forum no less. Doesn't mean I condone said actions.

I'm also impressed they remembered it can't be legally prescribed, because you have no idea how many people including healthcare professionals think decriminalization means prescription.

OP, I hope you realize that falsifying a drug test like this is a fast way to both termination and BON discipline. And this would be a very hard roadblock for you to overcome. BON discipline is made public, so anyone can see what you did, which reflects very poorly on you even if your performance as a nurse is otherwise impeccable.

Also, if you are caught, this employer is legally allowed to tell potential employers that you did this because it would be a true fact. Contrary to popular belief, employers can share more than employment dates and rehire status. If it's a true fact, they can share it.

Even in the most pro-marijuana states, THC use remains incompatible with nursing practice, and you do need to consider the implications that it will have on your career.
