High School Student inquiring a career in nursing....

I'm currently only a high school student, but I've been researching nursing, and next year I will be taking Dual Enrollment and I think I want to focus my courses on preparing for a major in nursing. I don't want to go any more than a Bachelor's Degree, because I have a scholarship that will pay 70% of my tuition but only for a Bachelor's.

I'm interested in case management, or pediatric. What do you suggest I do to prepare for nursing? I was thinking maybe to call my local hospital and ask them if I could perhaps follow a nurse around for a day so she/he can show me what it's like.

I'm also wondering what the hours and flexibility is like.

Congratulations on your scholarship! (They don't give those away to just anyone!) I think it would be a great idea to follow a nurse around to see what it may be like. However, there are many types of nursing and each one has it's own pro's and con's and different duties.

I chose to work part time, 2- 12 hour shifts a week, no week-ends so there is one example of the flexibility that nursing offers. This offers me the time with my family while earning a very good salary.

very nice scholarship i may say! but anyway, i always tell people to give nursing a try if they are undecided!! i started nursing myself back in hs about 2 years ago! i loved it, i always thought i would be a doctor but life carried me elsewhere! mucho of luck to you though!!

Great news about the scholarship. Hospital is a good place to start, so following a nurse is a great idea. But nurses are everywhere doing everything. I am a case manager, but spent time in public health, Family Practice Office, and Disease Management before settling where I am. A word of caution... Nursing is as much a calling as a job. Don't pay too much attention to all the complaining and groaning we do....most of us really love our jobs.

congratulations on your scholarship! along with following a nurse around for a day as everyone else mentioned, during the summer after high school taking a nursing assistant course may help. (every facility is different, so what you see at one hospital most likely will be different in another. also, different things go on from day to day--so you may want to have more exposure) you can get a job in the hospital, work with nurses and learn to care for patients basic needs before you incorporate nursing skills into it. it may help you in making a better decision about nursing and about what classes you will take depending on your decision. greatest of luck to you!

hey yall! i am curently a high school junior and i am planing on persuing a career in nurseing!....i know all the hours availebl because i have an older sister who is a nurse and she has really helpd get me pumpd up for it

But the only problem i am having is desiding if i should be critiacal care or anastisia...i am very interested in both....i am going to get a bachelors for sure and then would like to get my masters...oh ya i really want to go to john hopkins university...if some one could please give some advise for me i would love it! thanks
