A nursing student asks for assistance with understanding Rh incompatibility and Rh anti globulin administration. What information should the nurse provide to the nursing student?

Answer: Rh serum is given during the antepartum period when the mother is Rh-negative and the mother's Coombs's test is negative.

My questions:

When is Rhogam given during the antepartum?

What is a Coomb's test, please explain in simple terms?

Homework? Studying for NCLEX? Although my colleagues have very helpfully given you resources, where did you look before thinking that we would tell you? ;)

Hint: Great book: Laboratory Studies and Diagnostic Tests with Nursing Implications, Joyce LeFever Kee. Get it at Amazon, get it now. It will help you on far more than this one thing. :)

Specializes in Pedi.

Why is Rhogam given? If you understand that, you should be able to think of scenarios when it would need to be given antepartum. What needs to happen before Rh incompatibility becomes a problem?
