Ghostly experiences??

Nurses General Nursing

I was just wondering if anyone out there has had any "ghostly" experiences as a nurse? I have had several unexplainable things happen during my career but two really come to mind..

I took care of a beautiful little old lady when I was a fairly new nurse in a nursing home. This lady used to sit next to me at the nurses station nearly all night long when I worked nights. I would give her a pile of washcloths to fold which she would do then I would mess them up and she would do it again..we would "chat" and have a cup of tea...she was a darling. She always used to reach over and touch my hair and say "your hair is so pretty". I was charge the night she was dying and I spent quite a lot of time in her room with her keeping her comfortable since her "family" could not "handle" being there.. As I was listening to her lungs she passed. I stood there and of course got all teary..I swear I felt a hand touch my hair and I heard a sort of a woosh by my left ear..

The other was not so pleasant..this woman (also at the nursing home) was a mean and nasty person and she did not have dementia. She would scratch and try to bite and spit her pills all over and swear..I came on shift at 11p and saw her at 1130..I was at the nurses station charting probably an hour later when the CNAs did 12 pm rounds and all of a sudden I hear a loud scream from her room. Myself and the other RN on ran to the room and the woman was dead but she was grasping the side rails and she had a look of utter terror on her face..I still have chills when I think of what she looked like..there was no warning of her death..If there is a grim repaer, she looked like she saw him. The other nurse and I have been best friends since working together there and we still talk about that night..

I was just wondering of anyone else has ever experienced anything like this while nursing...?? Erin

I'm a medical assistant (currently in nursing school as well) at a large primary care practice. About 2 years ago, one of my coworkers, whom I'll call Anna, was at home with her parents when she heard a gunshot. She and her mother rushed to the sound to find that her father, who had a chronic illness, had shot himself in the head, essentially destroying his face. He was still alive. My coworker, who used to be an EMT, immediately went to the phone and called 911 -- just as she should have done -- then returned to her father. Of course, he didn't survive. Along with all the other horrendous emotions, my coworker felt overwhelming guilt that she hadn't tried to do CPR on her dad (not that there was anything left to do CPR on, but we aren't always rational).

About a year later, or perhaps a little less, I had a dream in which, out of nowhere, Anna's father came and stood next to me and said, "Tell Anna that I really loved her." This was very strange, because I had never met the man; my only involvement in the whole affair had been grief for Anna's suffering. The next day at work, there was a little voice inside my head, compelling me to tell Anna about the dream. I wasn't about to do so -- I was afraid it would upset her, since she didn't often talk about her dad's death. But the voice became so disturbing that I finally found her back in the kitchen and told her what had happened. To my absolute horror, she threw her arms around me and started crying... exactly what I'd wanted to avoid.

When she'd calmed down, she explained why she was so upset. Turns out she had been praying for a sign that her father forgave her for not being able to save him. The dream was the sign. I still cry just thinking about it.

Buddha, Nikki,...wow, so many of these stories gave me goosebumps or put tears in my eyes. I love talking about this sort of stuff! I have always had a strong belief in the paranormal and afterworld. I used to want to go into studying paranormal psych! Anyway, I've had a couple experiences. One happened to my mom, one to me.

When my mom was in her twenties she had a best friend whom was like a sister to her, Sharon, that was diagnosed with Leukemia and died shortly thereafter. My mom said that Sharon was very scared to die. About a week after she died my mom was sitting home late at night missing her best friend, and out of lonliness dialed Sharon's old phone number. It rang, and of course no one picked up. Well, the next day my mom went into work. This was in the early seventies and she was a teller at a bank. In those days, people did not have regular acsess to a tellers phone; they had to go through a switchboard operator to reach the teller. My mom's phone rang that morning and she picked it up only to hear Sharon's distinctive voice on the other line saying her name, "Pam? Pam..." My mom, in shock of course, tried to communicate but the line went dead. My mom immediately went to the operator to ask if a call had come through, and the operator, confused, said, "no." A few months later my mom spoke with a medium at a party who told her that since she had tried to contact Sharon on the phone, Sharon tried to contact her back.

I do believe that the dead can communicate through electricity. I believe we as humans are energy, so it does make sense. The story that happened to me was: I was driving through a cemetary (I actually find them quite peaceful in the summer,) and I stopped my car to admire a beautiful tomb outside. All of a sudden my cars electric locks started locking and unlocking by themselves! For some reason I didn't really give it much thought at the time, but later when I looked back at it, I realized it was freaky.

Thanks for listening! And please everyone, share more! Louisepug

I had always wanted to have a picnic in a cemetery. It's the ideal peaceful place. So, my friend and I did it two years ago. We even took pictures.:D

When the hospital where I work first opened it had only one nurses station for the med/surg unit and behind the chart rack was a wall with hangers. The hospital gave each doc on staff a stethescope with his name engraved on it and they hung on those hangers. About a year after I went to work there one of the docs died. His stethescope was removed, I assumed it was given to his wife. One night ICU called the station and said a telemetry had suddenly started showing out of one of our empty rooms. We went to check, needless to say nothing was there. Sometime later that night one of nurses happened to look at the wall of stethescopes and there was the dead doc's stethescope hanging back on his hanger.... guess he needed to come make rounds. For the rest of the night none of us would go down the halls by ourselves.

This is such a great thread. I have a few stories to share some work related some not. They are long though...

When i was 2 years old my mother died of a heart attack at the age of 41, i've always had dreams about her trying to communicate with me during many times of my life especially when i seemed to be in turmoil. When i was 19 years old i had joined the us marines and had just finished bootcamp, duty school and was on my way to my first duty station in wash d.c.

I had very little cash on me when i arrived at the d.c. bus terminal and was suppose to go to a small marine duty station called henderson hall in arlington va. I saw a armed forces duty phone for information, help ect. I talked to the operator on the line to find when henderson hall was, i was told it was not listed in the books and probally did not exist, i started to cry, the duty officer informed me he would call me back in about 10 minutes, he would try to get more information and help for me. The moment i hung up the phone, the phone rang again and a woman with a southern accent(my mother was from texas) told me help was on the way, it would be ok and i was disconnected. The next momment a man called behind me "Marine, do you need some help?" I turned around and saw the biggest black marine with tons of brass on his chest looking at me with the kindest eyes. I told him i was looking for a duty station called hh and noone had heard of it,he replied" I work at henderson hall. "

To make an even longer story short, we hiked to henderson hall, about 5 miles, he got me checked in and became a mentor to me for the 4 years i was stationed there. I later called the armed forces help station that night thanking them for their assistance. They remembered me but never got the chance to call back til about an hour later wondering what had happened to me. I believe my mother guided this man to me. Later i asked The staff sgt how did he know i needed help? He said "he didn't", he felt a strange sense that i needed him for some reason, normally he never takes a bus from maryland but his car for some reason went dead prior to leaving maryland, he found out later it worked perfectly fine once he was in d.c.

I also think that there are people selected as angels to live among us in this world and he was mine. This man later that year became one of the marines to be a sentry soldier to president bush(dad bush) the next year and is retired living in maryland. I will always remember him in my prayers

This is more a ghost story than the other one was so..

I was a new grad working in a hospital about 7 years ago, i had a 40 year old woman scheduled for some cardiac testing and she was ringing her call bell and wanted to see the nurse. It was 2 am and she ususually is sound asleep by now so i walked the long hall where there were only a few patients in that wing of the unit. I asked her if something was wrong? She said she can't sleep because of that lady walking back and forth in the hallway. I told her there was noone in the hall, thinking maybe she woke from a dream trying to reassure her that noone was out there. She then informed me she was now in her room and was standing right behind me, i then felt a tap on the shoulder and saw a cloud of smoke, i hightailed it out of there and moved her up closer to the nsg station. The rest of nurses just lasughed it off, but one rn who worked on the unit over 20 years said i met the ghost of 6w and not to be alarmed she just wanted to catch my attention and welcome me to the unit.

I have had several ghostly experiences as a nurse, but the most precious one involves my mother and father. Mother died a year before Daddy did. After her death, he told us every morning that he had dreamed about her during the night and was very tearful when he would tell us that. After a couple of weeks, I asked him to tell me about the dreams, hoping the dreams were of more pleasant times and I could get him to appreciate the dreams, not be so sad about them. He said she just was in bed with him...nothing more. I asked if she was there when he woke up (several times a night) to go to the bathroom. Yes, she was...and left just before dawn each morning. I told him I thought it was her spirit sleeping with him, not a dream. After that, he always smiled rather than crying when telling us she was with him during the night. Every morning he would say, "your mother was back last night." One day he and I were sitting and talking, him in his usual chair, me in the "guest" chair, and mother's usual chair empty. We were talking politics. I suddenly felt a very warm, physically and emotionally, feeling move over me. The conversation stopped for a minute, then he said..."can you see her?" nodding towards mother's chair. I said "no". He said "your mother is sitting there". I told him I couldn't see her but could feel her. After his death a year after her's, we sold their home. As we were leaving, we went through every room opening every room and closet door to be sure nothing was left behind. As I was going out the front door, to lock it behind us, I faced into the house and said "Mother, Daddy, if you are still here, it is ok for you to go...we are all ok." From the back of the house I heard a door slam. I ran back through the house and every door was standing open. I guess you can't see the door into heaven.

These are great stories!! I was talking to my mom about this thread last night and she said, "you have always had a sort of 6th sense" Apparently from the time I was 3-5 (I don't remember) I had 3 invisible friends.."Dee dee, doo doo and MoDo". She said when I first started talking about them she brushed it off but they literally became part of the family..she said one time she sat down on the couch when I was about 4 and I screamed and began to cry because she had sat on Modo and hurt him..she said she really began to wonder..They went away when I started Kgarten. Maybe they were my guardian angels?? There is just so much we don't know and so much out there we can't explain with logic and science. I just love hearing these stories..kind of solidifies there is something else out there..;) erin

I've enjoyed this thread also...keep em coming!

This is not work-related, but it just happened last night and I thought I would share it with you all. After my kids went to sleep last night, I closed their bedrooms doors so the living room noise wouldn't wake them. My kids all sleep with their closet doors open & the closet light on, so I wasn't worried about them waking in the dark. Two hours later, my husband heard our 4 y/o daughter crying in her room. When he tried to get in the door was locked, so he unlocked it and went in. He said when he walked in the room all of the hair on his body stood up and he tingled all over with goosebumps. He brought McKenna to the LR & she told him she had been scared because she couldn't open her door but that the little girl came out of her closet to talk to her! We asked her what she looked like and she said she was "dressed different." I asked if she wore a dress and she said yes, a flowered one. We asked if she said anything to her and she said that the little girl told her she liked her. I asked her if she'd ever seen the little girl before and she said she has. Needless to say, we tucked her into our bed with me & closed her bedroom door.

Now, we've known since we moved in that there was something here because we've had weird little stuff happen, but for my daughter to see her...whoa!

Dana

wow..that is weird..I know my mom said that every morning I would go down into the basement to get my "friends"..I do vaguely remember that, but not them. We lived in a old old house at the time and the basement was a true basement. She said I told her that they lived down there when I wasn't playing with them?

Like I said in a previous post, I have read literature which speaks to the fact that children tend to have more of these experiences just because they are so much more open and accepting than adults..:) Erin

Wow, dana! So where is your daughter going to sleep tonight or from now on? I would so scared, even though she said the little girl was friendly. How long have you all lived in that house? The door being locked would really concern me!

Like I said, she slept with us last night, but I don't know what she'll do tonight. I guess I'll just have to see what she feels like doing at bedtime. I'm not sure what was up with the door being locked. We have four kids (and three more friends were over playing yesterday), so I don't know if one of them turned the lock and I didn't realize when I pulled the door shut. I never tried to turn the knob so I don't know. I don't know if I could handle the other possibility, which was raised by my best friend when I called her last night freaking out! After that I even started thinking about replacing the knobs with ones that don't lock...

It's a fairly new house...it was built two years ago and we were the first people to live in it; we've been here a year and three months. Like I originally posted, we've had weird stuff happen before. My husband and best friend both caught glimpses of a child running through our kitchen, and one night when the kids and I came home the digital display on our microwave said "Child" and I couldn't make it go away no matter what buttons I pushed. (I finally unplugged it and it went back to normal.) Another time two of my daughters shoes went missing--I turned my house and the closets (which I keep everything hung up in, nothing on the floors) all upside down trying to find them and never could; about two months later, however, I went into McKenna's closet to hang up laundry and one of the shoes was sitting in the middle of the floor. Okay!! The next day I went in again and -- you guessed it!-- the other missing shoe was there.

I'll keep you posted and let you know if anything else WEIRD happens!!
