Crappy Nurses Day

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Yesterday my hospital "celebrated" nurses day. They had vendors from a local scrub store and jewelry outlet with tables in a tiny area off the side of the main conference room, where the managers got to sit at linen-covered tables and got served luncheon. Nurses got pieced of sub sandwich and a wal-mart veggie tray that had only leftover broccoli on it when I got there.

Also, I was the only one there, getting "lunch" at 2pm. The people staffing the area were wondering where all the nurses were, duh, they can't get off the floor!!

Later they announced "hors d'erves (spelling?) and an "awards" ceremony in the conference room. I stopped by about 45 min. later and the DON was still giving out certificates for all the new grads in the hospital. ***??? A co-worker went down after that and said there were NO nurses there, just educators and managemnet type people, and the DON walked right by her without making eye contact, THE ONLY ACTUALLY WORKING NURSE IN THE ROOM!!!! And the "hors d'erves" were dried up and burning in the warmers, apparantly they were served to the awards people and not made available to actual staff. Go figure. Oh, everybody gets a plastic mug, a pint sized version of the ones we give out free to patients.

Yeah, crappy nurses day to you too.

Over the years I have seen the nurse day presents dwindle down to nothing.

I don't know if our hospital did anything or not. If they did, I didn't hear anything about it.

Oh, well. Who cares?

Haha, my hospital gave some crappy snacks and sodas to day shift, and absolutely nothing to night shift.... happy nurses' day indeed! Ah well...

I'm just thankful i still have a job!

So far we have had a very nice Nurses' Week!

Yesterday we had a Popcorn and Coke party ay 2 and again at 9 for all nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, CNAs) including non-clinical nurses like me!

We were given a very nice key chain with the hospital name and logo on it.

Friday we will have a catered lunch and night shift will have a supper about 9 pm.

Next Wednesday we will have a breakfast where both shifts can attend.

Staff who only work weekends are also included in activites.

The administrative nurses "relieve" the staff nurses so that they can attend these functions.

In fact, at the popcorn party, the staff nurses were all sitting around gabbing and I had to grab my popcorn and eat it at my desk !

Ha ha sounds almost identical to our "Nurses day" with the chicken and salad, cookies and water; with scrub store selling unisex uniforms! we got a vinyl tote also :chuckle

I wish "Nurse's Day/Week" was more than a pathetic picnic. STOP FEEDING US ALREADY! A FREE LUNCH FOR A YEAR OF ABUSE DOES NOT CUT IT!

I wish nurse week had more professional tone to it. Don't shower me with pens/keychains/buttons/and handwash (look at the big picture when they give out handwash/alcohol sanitizer).

Perhaps a look at nursing's history - our struggles and victories over the years. Perhaps management actually LISTENING to the LPN's/CNA's/RN's and backing us up. Maybe a way to boost the morale of the unit staff - Broadway tickets, movie passes, or a simple Thanks you note!

You know what I'm sick of?

The economy being an excuse for employers to treat us like crap. Let's face it, even when the economy is booming nursing staff often gets treated poorly, dealing daily with poor staffing, horrible health benefits, no breaks, no lunches, getting docked for lunches that weren't taken, I'm sure everyone here could go on and on ad nausem.

Now that the economy is in the state it's in and jobs are harder to come by, it seems as if nurses, always willing to accept sub-par working conditions, are now willing to put up with even more, all in the name of "I'm just glad I have a job at all!"

The other day Our Department sent 20 of us off duty nurses and some guests to a Box Seating at the Local Minor league baseball team, to watch them play. The food and the service was great, the food was ok and also free margaritas and beer. We were visited by the team mascots and had a great time. However our team was shut out score wise. But otherwise a lot of fun.

The on duty nurse get to go another day, not bad.

They will suddenly notice you work there when the pandemic comes and they force you to work 24 hour shifts siting "extraordinary conditions".
