I'm a new nurse, but I've had a "bad back" for almost all my life. I havent gone to any specialists or anything, and only consulted my PCP about back pain once back in August when I had unbearable sciatica for the first time. My back pain has become more and more prevalent recently.. it used to be more lumbar pain, but I've had more upper back aches lately, and I'm starting to wonder if its r/t my breast size (DDD). Need to get them cut down lol.

I'm getting ready to start working on Med Surg after only working in 2 ALFs, which is "light" in terms of moving, pushing, lifting, etc. I've considered buying a back brace, but I am not sure if that would help enough.

Do any other nurses here have back problems? Suggestions?

The chiropractor is my best friend :)

Otherwise, I end up with numbness and tingling in my shoulders on a routine basis..and lower back pain, and an all around discomfort which can put me to tears at times..

have you considered trying a chiropractor?

My ortho says that my F cups are not the reason why I have two herniated discs (L4 &L5), but I still have my consult appointment with the plastic surgeon set up and I go for physical therapy and to the chiropractor.

So my advice (for what it's worth) is to see an orthopedist, start going to a chiropractor and see what they say. The brace may do more harm than good.

could be fibromyalgia- would be good to see a rheumatologist - rule out any problems such as hypothyroid disease- arthritis, etc - i have lived for yrs with chronic back pain and has steadily got worse. not much can do for fibromyalgia - exercise, good eating and sleep and pain meds if it is severe- ( many docs frown on painmeds as they dont recognize it as a problem ) - get a good check up and rule out any trouble and if it is fibromyaliga see a pain clinic. good luck. many blessings.

I consider my physical therapist my body mechanic. Just like my car if I do not go for regular treatment my body does not "run" as well. Going for a treatment on a consistent basis has made my physical issues feel so much better. If you have the insurance coverage go for it! Especially effective are craniosacral physical therapists -which is the type I go to.
