I had a baby in February and just returned to work this week. I work in critical care and have been there for 6 years. I really want to switch to a different area but I'm not sure where to go. I want something that is going to be less stress than critical care. Ideally I would love to have weekends and holidays off. If I had to chose one of the two I would chose holidays off.

I'm looking for less stress and that is really the most important right now. I'm a much happier person and a better mom when I'm not a constant ball of stress.

Which areas of nursing fall within these parameters?

I've been looking into OR, PACU, case management, and office nursing.

Ambulatory surgery center. Especially PACU, with your ICU background.

I have to agree with this. The ambulatory surgery center will give you the weekends and holidays off and with your ICU background PACU would be a good fit. Even if you can't find an opening in an ambulatory surgery center, the PACU I was in, I only had to take weekend call once every 13 weeks and holiday call once a year, so it wasn't bad at all.

I have a friend who works in endoscopy. She loves it. She works from 830a to 5pm, m-f, no holidays or weekends. She worked with me (Onc/Palliative/med-surg) and she was never happy, didn't have much confidence that she was a good nurse (she was). She really shines in endo. She tells me it's a lot less stressful. Check that out.
