Anyone ever give thorazine for fever?

  1. I got an order for thorazine iv, for a fever. I've never heard of this before, but it worked. Temp went from 107 to 102 in 2 hours

I guess hiccups and psychosis aren't the only things it's good for.

No I have never given Thorazine for a fever. I guess it's true that we never stop learning.

Very interesting. May I ask what caused the fever of 107? (Might give us a clue why the thorazine was helpful.)

Well she was probable sepsis, but we were thinking there was a neuro component involved. Wbc were 25,000. We drew blood cultures, but of course the wee pending. Hx of multiple myeloma and plasma dyscasia. There were some definite nuero components.

I saw where it is used for tetanus/lockjaw. Hmmm. Will think about this and see if there is a doc to ask tomorrow at work.

The UK has drastically reduced use of Thorazine (we call it Thioridazine) because of cardiac complications.

Ok, I've done a google search and several sites are listing hyperthermia as a side effect and stating that thorozine can cause hyperthermia. An older nurse at work said she remembers giving it years ago post op for hyperthermia related to shrivering. Does any one know anything about this it is driving me crazy. I rarely see the doc that ordered it or I would ask him.
