Am I making a mistake?

I graduated from Nursing school with my ASN degree, passed the NCLEX last week and I also started back to school in June. My long term goal is to become an APN. I found out last week I was awarded a scholarship to pursue my BSN it is a full paid scholarship for the next two years(only need it till December 2010). All that is the wonderful stuff.

Now the bad stuff, I am only doing a little bit of home health right now (stuff a cna could do) and not making much money. But with the full schedule I have to take in the fall a full time job is not a go right now. Hospital jobs are impossible for me because I have a son with autism who is very high needs in the afternoon after preschool and I dont have anyone to watch him(or the other two) while I wrap up a twelve hour day. My dh is a truckdriver and is gone the majority of the time(only home 3 days every other month) so I dont have a lot of back up.

Am I messing out by not running out and finding a job? I am jealous of my friends and their jobs and they keep telling me if I keep waiting I will never get a job. Is this true? Am I going to get my BSN and still never work?

Wow, you got a scholarship, fully paid? Oh, I wish. Life is hard, but take opportunity when its knocking. Everything will work out, you will find a way. The education is something that will stay with you, get it while you can. It's way harder to go back later (many never do). Congratulations. And, good luck.

Weigh things up if you are capable of doing multiple works. hehe you know yourself better if you're used in doing multiple things. :) take care!

Many people do the BSN without working. Do what you know you can handle.

No mistake. You are doing a great job at juggling your priorities. There is no reason to rush into the field, there will still be jobs in a couple years, and you are getting paid to go to school. Keep being a good mother, working hard at school, and keep your head up! You'll come out of it with a great degree, and at that time you will have plenty of time to navigate your career. :yeah:

First of all, congratulations on your scholarship! :clpty:

Second, the previous posters have given you excellent advice. It sounds like you have enough going on in your life. Continue being a good mom to your son. Work hard in your BSN program. If money isn't a big, immediate issue and you don't "have to" work, don't. You're being prudent and wise by putting your son and your education ahead of a job that might siphon your time and energies away from them.

Thanks so much guys! I had the decision all set in my mind, then I let the little devil that other people put in my head make me second guess myself. I really just want to continue doing well in school and hopefully get my son as prepared as I can for kindergarten next school year.

chances are in this job market you would have a hard time finding a job as a new grad anyway. Go for the bsn, by the time you graduate the economy should have recovered at least a little.

I would go for it! Even though you aren't in a hospital setting you are still getting experience as a nurse anyways because you are in home health. So you have a nursing job. Plus maybe by the time you finish your bsn the economy will be better. We can hope anyway.
