Gateway Fast Track LPN - after 1 month-my experiences

U.S.A. Arizona

Updated:   Published

This forum has been my primary resource to find answers about what to expect as a new student @ Gateway, and one thing I've noticed is dozens of threads asking about what goes on once you actually begin block 1 - especially in regards to what might be helpful to study before classes start.

I'm sure I'll forget some things, but here's what I've experienced in the first month...

Lectures are once a week, and "labs" are twice a week - this could be because I'm enrolled in a Summer schedule and they needed to get the hours in somewhere. Clinicals for us are 12 hours, on Saturdays, but we've been told that they avoid Saturday placements whenever possible.

Grading - 76% is passing, 75.9% is failing, and they don't do rounding. Attendance - you get to miss ONE lab or clinical per semester. My clinical instructor said if you're really sick, come to clinicals anyway and she'd try to find an "alternate" assignment if at all possible, that didn't involve patient contact.

225 points for quizzes( 9 quizzes total), 75 points for the final. No points for clinical or lab time, it's either pass or fail.

There is a medication math quiz, 10 questions - not part of your grade, but you can't pass meds until you pass the test. At least one clinical instructor has her own test, you must pass both tests to pass meds with her. You get three chances to pass, after you take the quiz twice, our instructor makes you wait and review for a month before your third and final try. Not sure what happens if you fail 3 times - I doubt it's good.

Quiz number one was 15 questions, it was given 2 weeks into class, and covered 13 chapters. Yeah, you read that right - get out your reading glasses. We covered a ton of material very quickly, but it was primarily CNA-type material, and for fast track, you already took a CNA class. Things like vital signs, ROM, Scope of Practice, PPE.

Quiz #2, 25 points - covered 22 chapters (a couple of different books) , and a couple of electronic modules (evolve, EDGT, etc) - The eight "rights of medication" (look up the five rights, then add, - right to refuse, right documentation, and right supplies).

Quiz #3 was 30 points, and ONLY covered 11 chapters... :)... medication/biology, etc...

I'm not trying to scare anyone, this is what I experienced, and FWIW, the quizzes weren't easy, but you aren't likely to fail if you did the reading. My average is currently 85%, and I have no background in healthcare at all.

As you can imagine - they're looking mostly for concepts, not factoids.

Clinicals so far have been a blast for me - I got a great instructor who told us on the first day that we'd walk out of her clinicals with almost every single proceedure on our chart checked off, if they did that proceedure @ this facility, and so far we seem to be on track. I did clinical #2 last week, and so far, I've been checked off on accuchecks, passing meds, wound care, and foleys.

For some instructors you need a care plan every single week, and my instructor said we only need 3 for the semester, but they better not be cut-n-paste plans. They have to be well thought out, specific (customized) to the client, and you need to be able to explain why you're doing what your doing to the instructor. I haven't turned one in yet, and the patient I picked week one went home Saturday, so I get to start over...:crying2:

As for what you'll experience in month 1 - it could be WAAAAY different... I've already experienced some instructors that do a great job of putting you to sleep or confusing you. I hope that isn't who you get, but understand they are out there.

MMR should not be over 10 yrs...they said that they will not check Medical part of the application until the turn in dates..so quit the waiting and to be sure, get the MMR...(just a thought)..I will be turning my application as well and worried about all the requirements...

I faxed my stuff to the woman who checks off the medical records, and she said my stuff was all okay and I met the requirements. My MMR was over 10 years old, do you think that is going to be a problem? She said it was fine, and that they accept records from the health dept. Now I'm worried. Who told you that about the MMR? My doctor said that I should not get it if I have already had the vaccine.

Sorry your MMR should be okay...my mistake..TD is the one that needs to be within the last 10 yrs...

I am worried too about all the requirements, we can probably chill and let them tell us if we miss anything...

My fear is that they will tell me I need something, and then I won't get the test results or whatever they need back in time....

So how do they notify you when you are accepted? Is it by phone or email? If it's by email, do they notify you using the email address that you put down on the application?

I wouldn't fret too much - the shots they require are widely available - I got a bunch of mine at the grocery store and at an urgent care place, no appointments needed, just walk in and pay the fee.

As far as notification, I believe most of it is by email, but they do seem to have a habit of calling the day before class starts to fill in seats.

I turned everything in today, and it was fine. They accepted the records from the health dept. So, if anyone else was worried about your paperwork, I wouldn't worry about it. I had the record from the health dept, titer for hep b & Varicella, and that was all I needed. So, I turned everything in, and now the waiting begins.

I must say though that I was there an hour early, and there were a couple people who just cut in line, and I was surprised by that.

I turned in everything too. 3 weeks seems like a long wait now! Are they accepting 100 people for January start? I hope so, that seems like a lot of spots! And really, people cut in line!? I somewhat surprised there weren't more people in line or waiting when I got there...

I got there early (about 45 min early), and there were two people that just went in front of me and several other people. One lady just went right in behind the first two people in line.

Yeah, I expected there to be more people too, but there are several more days. The woman who took my application said that the chances are slim of getting in for January, but who knows...Do you think more than 100 people are waiting for January from last time, or do you think some of us may get in for January?

I actually don't think there would be that many people on their wait list, because last spring they added the afternoon group, and then did that random summer group. So I am thinking (hoping) that adding both those sessions cut down the wait list tremendously…so the people who are applying now could get right in. A girl I met in May that said she applied in April and got in for the fall. So it can happen, and several people on here got right in. But others waited a semester. I just think we may have a good shot since those two added sessions just happened to start right before this…I hope I am right! :)

You have a good point! Post if you get in..That would be excellent to start in January!

The lady I talked to said that it was highly, highly unlikely that anyone applying for the Spring 2011 semester would get in. She said there was over 100 people on the waiting list, and only 70 spots available. For anyone applying this time around to get in at least 31 people would have to not want spots, and then your name would have to randomly be picked out of all the people this time who had applied! I wish that some of us could get in for the spring, but I think our best bet is to plan for August.

Did any of you notice a lot of people being turned away? It seemed to me like a lot of people were being told that their vaccinations were incomplete, and their applications could not be accepted. The first day I went in, got turned away, and had to get more records and bring them back :uhoh3:

Happy waiting everyone :)

Yes, it seemed like some were getting turned away. I noticed that too. So, it doesn't look like anyone that is applying now will get in or maybe only a few people will get in. I'm hopeful for August...
