GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

Good for you guys! Shows that hard work definitely pays off!

But actually we wanted it not to pass so that it gives future Excelsior college students a chance to go to school in this state. This bill says they need clinical hours. She is closing all loopholes for this state with Excelsior college.

i may be wayyyy off base but it would have to pass the senate in order to become a done deal. am i not correct?? just as sb49 would have to pass the house in order to become a done deal.

any takers??

yep, you're right!... has to pass the senate, then the gov has to sign it...

unless it's greatly ammended for our benefit, a compromise ec can accept, i'm sure he won't sign!! :bowingpur:bowingpur:bowingpur

Absolutely!!! No worries!!! We will prevail!!!:D:D:D:D:D

They are still working on that... they are not done with this HB... we had a meeting between lobbying and discussed that, this is gonna be quite protracted and convoluted, but we are not giving up, we have a lot of support behind us... some things may have to be fixed later in order to get the big picture now, but they are working on all of it...

we will have to keep our Reps informed of progress and changes so that THEY will know how to vote and fight for us!!!

Yep!! Now the focus becomes the Senate! I foresee more emailing in our future!!!:D:typing:typing:typing:typing:typing:typing:typing:typing:typing:typing

Does this new law allow you to endorse in with two years of RN experience from another state?

does this new law allow you to endorse in with two years of rn experience from another state?

i do believe it does!! :):)

Keep in mind that this new bill is not a law yet. It still has to go to the Senate and then the Governor. I wonder if the President is aware of the situation. He just did a press conference not long ago on the shortage of nurses and that he didn't know what the US was going to do.

It won't be long and GA will have to change its mind on the EC situation. The RN's will be burned out from working overtime and eventually find jobs outside the hospitals--were they aren't required to stay on duty if they don't have someone relieve them. It is already happening. RN's either go to insurance companies, schools, doctors offices, law offices, etc. Less and less people are wanting to work the 13-14 hour shifts in the hospital, when they have the option to work from home (insurance companies) and make the same money and have off holidays and weekends.

Mark my words! GA will change its rules and allow EC grads to become GA RN's.

I talked to Excelsior a few weeks ago on which states we could not work in and i was told GA, VI, CA, MA. I also was looking forward to work in GA. On the other hand i was told that you had to work in another state for a few years than go back. The clinical experience is three days at a host hosp in five chosen states. TOUGH! . but they give you on-line training and you have to be a practicing nurse, talk to your DON about training with RN at your facility and teaching you skills. (for any one whose going to EC like me).
