GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

I feel your pain on Ga board of nursing. Several years ago when I graduated LVN in Ca and relocated to Ga due to military. GBON informed me I was not eligible for licensure because I did not have a one years experience .What new grad has that! They told me I could work for the government to get the training or basically leave my husband and return to Ca to gain a years experience. They have no love for ya! Eventually I did receive a Ga license by working on a military installation. And now I am working in NC and I used to keep my GA license active but I let it lapse because I am no longer living there its almost dreadful to wonder what would be the repurcussions for allowing my license to lapse. Prayfully I will finish my RN and my husband will not have to transfer there to eliminate the grief they will put me through. Yes, I did hear from a friend they are no longer accepting Excelsior. But I did hear the governor passed a law but GABON interpreted the law to suit their needs and the governor said he did not mean for them to eliminate any schools like they did. I wish you the best of luck on your issue.

Has anyone heard anything about the board meeting today?

MOST California employers will no longer hire you with an Excelsior degree.

I called a few of my pals at some local Central Valley hospitals today. No one has heard of this before. One of my friends who works in HR said even if they wanted to bar graduates from one school or another, they wouldn't have enough funds to cover the lawyers defense when they would be sued for discrimination. Good point she had. In a litigation-happy climate coupled with a poor economy, I guess its best not to go looking to be named as a defendant in lawsuits.

So I started thinking, I could always use a few extra thousand dollars in my pocket to settle out such a suit for cost of defense. So, Robert, please do let me know who these employers are. Baby needs a new pair of shoes. Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Oh, God, Tammy!! I laughed so hard I almost wet my pants!!! I love you guys!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:up::up::up::up:

I actually have a couple of friends who work in Cali and I almost took a job there before I got preggers five years ago. They had absolutely no problem with where I went to school. In fact, the interviewer made a comment, something like, "Oh, that is a very hard program to get through! I am impressed!" I had the job, but had to turn it down when I became up the duff:D

EDIT: BTW, I forgot, my friends who work in Cali? EC grads, as am I.

Please know that other Excelsior nurses have fought the good fight. Still, when it all comes down - will you be able to get a job? California still permits some students to test (those enrolled years ago). But, when they get their degree and try to get a job - many, many can't, because they're Excelsior graduates. MOST California employers will no longer hire you with an Excelsior degree. Don't waste years and thousands of dollars to end up broke, depressed, and unable to make a decent wage.

I am back in Cali and the hospitals actually really enjoy Ec grads. They even support you in getting your licensed endorsed in (since it's on a case by case basis) if you have had experience with the RN license elsewhere. I have spoken with multiple nursing recruiters here and Reno as well as the military locations near by with no problems and lots of support.

Just my :twocents:

Someone from the board called me a couple of weeks ago and told me that my application was complete and would be reviewed by the board on 3/16 or 3/17. My status has not changed and I am not sure how long it will take to find out if they issued me a licenses. I am changing my name to "RN in waiting". Story of my life since I completed EC in June 2008.

I was told my application would be reviewed on the 16th but I called yesterday and was told it would be reviewed at the board meeting this week. I am so tired of the run around!

I just called the board and she stated that I will know in 7-10 days about my license. Nothing was posted yet to my file about the boards decision. I want to know about my license!!!!!

Has anyone heard anything about their license?

I called again today and the I got an answer on the first ring believe it or not. She told me, "like we told you yesterday, you will receive something in the mail 7-10 days from now about your license." I am tired of hearing that, so in order to annoy them, I will call everyday this week!!!!

Trust me I understand. They need to watch their tone! They work for the state so we are essentially paying their salaries you think they would so some understanding!

I am so sorry that you guys have to through such a rigamarole to get your license. This sounds much worse than the anticipation I felt with the CPNE. We are praying for you guys.
