GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

I am willing to try anything at this point. I believe the more people that write in the better, show force in numbers!!! Also any other RN that has worked with Regents/Excelsior grads can voice their experience with those nurses as well. I am hoping that Georgia will reconsider this"SUDDEN" decision and offer another solution instead of crushing so many peoples hopes and dreams, as well as depriving Georgia of more good nurses!! I passed my CPNE on 6/30/08 and I have yet to sit for the boards, I am still in a state if shock, I do not know what to do other than fight!!!

Are they at least going to offer the option of working so many hours in another state then appling for endorsement in Georgia??? If so how many hours? I can not find this info on the GBON website. Thanks

Sincerely

Wow it just seems to get worse! My thing is why did we not know about this before the legislature was passed? I does seem like EC should have given us a heads up. I completely understand the need for "highly qualified nurses" but this arcaic mentality that and education can only be completed between their four walls is ridiculous! It constantly kills me when on days like today I come behind someone at work who is a RN-BSN but yet is incompetent and lazy and I spend most of my morning fixing her screwups....2 heparin gtts that were not following the nomogram, one had been turned off for 6 hours with no order to d/c and the other had not been titrated for 12 hrs!

I do realize that this is only anecdotal, but to say that a student in a traditional program is somehow a safer healthcare provider because they showed up and observed is just nonsense.

I agree. I have a unique perspective as I am a medic nearing completion of the ASN with excelsior. My wife is an RN that went to a traditional school. She started two IV's in nursing school. I realize that you can not really compare the two fields, but to totally discount the amount of clinical experience is crazy. I had well over 1000 hrs of clinicals in medic school. We did ER, ICU, PICU, L&D, Surgery, and ambulance time. I doubt most traditional rn schools even come close to that. Not to mention my actual work experience as a medic in a busy er and on the ambulance. Excelsior's cpne makes sure you have the equivalent clinical competencies as a traditional school new grad. We all pass the same licensing test. I don't get it.

Sorry for the rant.:banghead:

Amen to that!!!! We have students that come on our floor ONCE A WEEK NOW!!! Then they come up and sit in the break room, lurk in the nursing station, and do the absolute BARE minimum bc the teacher is with the one student that is giving meds for the ONLY time of the semester. They dont want to LEARN bc they are under the impression that they are going to be RN's so they won't have to do bed baths are clean people up. (YEAH RIGHT, not how it works in the REAL WORLD) Then when the new grads come in.....WHoops!! They don't know how to do a darn thing. I am 100% sure that these students could NOT pass the CPNE!!! AND WE ARE NOT WORTHY FOR A GA LICENSE bc WHY??? When you do an online program, you can get away with this kinda stuff. If you aren't studying your tail off then you will FAIL the NC test and fail the CPNE. You can sit around and not study on your OWN FREE TIME, but you will throw $260 per test or $1800 down the drain!!!! I hope the board has a change of heart or we are left out to dry!!!! This is so unfair.

I must say that I feel your plight. My wife is also caught in this very situation. As a matter of fact when she was originally turned down by GA and posted it on this site many people attacked her and called her a liar (indirectly of course). I am not sure how long Excelsior has known about this but I know she has been having trouble getting licensed for several months; I suspected they knew about it in May. Her offical denial came July 10th for "not meeting clinical practice requirements" though she has managed to endorse her license to three other states. As it stands now she has RN license in four states but the one in which we live....she is not worthy? Not to mention having worked right here in GA for 13 years as a LPN; it is all absurd. I am very angry for her right now. I am an educator within the University System. I teach math at two different Universities in the Atlanta area. I can honestly say that not only will GA lose a damn good nurse, but they will also lose one of the best math professors I know....ME: I will take my family and move. I will not allow this state to destroy my wife's dreams, she has worked too hard on this. It is a dog gone shame.

In closing I will say that I am still very angry about the way many of you made my wife to feel. She cried herself to sleep many nights over this. I think several of you owe her an apology. You all should be more angry with Excelsior for not telling you this information sooner. Even if they did not know it is no excuse....THEY SHOULD HAVE!!

By the way.......ZIMSAINT IS MY WIFE.

HELLO EVERYONE,

my spelling is bad so please forgive me im just pisssssss:crying2:

I JUST GOT THIS OFF THE GABON. I AM ****. I BEEN LPN FOR 6YRS

I WORK HARD .I HAVE RN's COMING TO ME FOR HELP. YES I DO ASK THEM ALSO. SORRY TO SAY THIS BUT THEY CAN BRING NURSES FROM OTHER COUNTRYS TO WORK HERE BUT THE ONES THAT PAY TAXES AND VOTE THAT ARE LPN's WITH clinc skills they want to stop there dreams and lively hood. I spent alot of money I can't just up in move with my daughter. FROM MY UNDERSTANDING THERE ARE 1106 EC STUDENTS HERE IN GA. we all need to SHOW UP IN MACON NEXT MONTH MAKE it know that we are here and we vote so lets email, call, and get petition going for this before that date. like someone said on here get your bosses to write and call.

Important Announcement Concerning Statutory Changes to RN Licensure by Endorsement in Georgia

During the 2008 session of the Georgia legislature, a bill was passed that requires all applicants for licensure by endorsement to have graduated from a nursing education program approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing or which meets criteria similar to, and not less stringent, than those established by the Board. This bill went into effect on July 1, 2008 and is codified in O.C.G.A. 43-26-7©. The dean of Excelsior College of Nursing sent a letter dated August 5, 2008 to Excelsior students that implies erroneous and false information concerning the position of the Georgia Board of Nursing and the Board's executive director, Sylvia L. Bond. The Board takes seriously its duty to protect the public health, safety and welfare and the duty to ensure that nursing curricula should meet stringent, board-approved standards required by the recent changes in the law. Applicants for licensure by endorsement must graduate from schools whose curricula are no less stringent than those standards established by the Board. Unfortunately, Excelsior College of Nursing may have failed to warn its students of the changes in the law or to prepare for the change. The Board is not unsympathetic to the plight of the students who have been adversely affected by this new law, but the Board has a duty to uphold the law and is currently doing so.

The Board has established rules that state the requirements for board-approval for nursing education programs. These rules can be found on the web here (See Chapter 410-3, Nursing Education Programs): http://rules.sos.state.ga.us/cgi-bin/page.cgi?g=GEORGIA_BOARD_OF_NURSING%2FNURSING_EDUCATION_PROGRAMS%2Findex.html&d=1 The Board may waive rules, but only when doing so will not contradict the law. If the Board waived a rule so that applicants whose education did not meet board criteria are issued a license, the Board would be breaking the law and endangering the public's health, safety and welfare. The Board has a mandated duty to protect the public under O.C.G.A. 43-26-2, which states, "The purpose of this article is to protect, promote, and preserve the public health, safety, and welfare through legislative regulation and control of registered professional nursing education and practice. This article ensures that any person practicing or offering to practice nursing or using the title registered professional nurse, as defined, within the State of Georgia, shall be licensed as provided in this article." (Emphasis added.)

Hi everyone,

I am new to this posting. I discovered it when I was doing an internet search about ECs LPN to RN program. WHAT A SHOCK!! But I was wondering, if I can't or shouldn't do the EC program, would the program offered to LPNs to get a BSN through ISU be affected as well? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The LPN-BSN program at ISU does have clinicals arranged in the student's local area. I'm an EC student, so I don't know the particulars, but I wouldn't imagine this recent GBON bull would affect licensure of those students. Again, I don't know the particulars, though.

I think I have figured out what the GABON wants. First you get licensed in another state. Then you get a license in Canada or Mexico or any foreign country you choose. Once that is obtained you can then endorse into Georgia. They are looking for foreign nurses so I say give them some.

This was written in jest and sarcasism. But, I bet it would work.

LOL!! The scary thing is that this would probably work!
