FY 19 Navy Nursing

Published

Hey everyone,

I'm in the process of working with a recruiter and getting a package together in hopes of commissioning as a critical care nurse in the USN. I just wanted to see if any other applicants are out there!

A little about me-I only have about 7 months of RN experience in a level I ICU and my TNCC certification. Prior to getting my BSN, I served in the Air National Guard for 6 years as a 4N0 and a 4N1.

Specific questions I have:

1. Does anyone have specifics on the credentialing process? I've seen elsewhere on this forum that to become credentialed in a specialty, you only need 90 days of experience off orientation...Can anyone verify? I think the only weakness in my application would be my limited experience. I can't obtain the coveted CCRN certification until around the one year mark per the AACN's requirements.

2. My recruiter says med-surg/critical care are in high demand. Anyone out there know how many billets are available for direct accessions? My recruiter is on leave, else I'd ask him.

Thanks in advance!

I was feb board, recruiter called me beginning of March with selection. detailer called me in May bc he was trying to fill June ODS and I start ODS tomorrow. :-D. They need critical care so you should be good to go!

Thanks so much for the information. Trying to figure out how long I have to sit here in anticipation! That’s pretty quick turn around though, so that’s reassuring. That is so exciting! Good luck! It’ll be a quick five weeks!

Hey guys quick question. What does the application packet (or kit) that gets submitted to the board include? I already sent copies of birth certificate, SS, etc along with that meps paperwork forevers ago but there isn't much of an urgency with my recruiter since I'm still on orientation in my new unit (switched specialty, welp). I went ahead and had LORs sent to him along with my college transcripts. Is there anything else?

Not sure if it's taboo to talk about what the kit includes, especially since I want to get the paperwork bit out of the way (is there an essay involved...?) while I wait to reach 90 days after orientation but I guess I'll wait or ask my recruiter again.

Recruiter should have sent you a checklist. It’s pretty extensive. And a ton of paper work for background check etc. I have a great recruiter and it’s still taken me a few months (I’ve sent every paper back same day) it’s an extremely slow process so the more you can knock out while your waiting the better.

Has anyone gotten the retention bonus with the accession bonus for medsurg or is it one or the other, or one after the other?

You can get the accession bonus if you get credentialed in whatever you're applying for but you’re only eligible for retention bonus if you are certified. I am not a certified critical care nurse so I am not eligible but I was credentialed by CCPD for critical care so I can apply for the accession bonus. Just waiting to hear back. Hope that makes sense/is helpful.

That means I’m loosing a lot of money as a nurse practitioner commissioning as a med surge nurse, I’m only certified as a FNP not medsurg nurse, yikes!

That may be a special circumstance... that’s the guidance I got from my recruiter. Here’s the link that goes in depth.

Thanks so much for answering! In the beginning he asked me some questions to see if I even qualify for the military then to send in my identification type docs like DL, birth certificate, etc. then fill out the meps paperwork. I went ahead and had LORs and transcripts sent to him. I have meps later this month and regardless of asking my recruiter for what else I need to send to him (i.e., a checklist) I get no response ?

Not sure if he's waiting to see if I pass meps or not before going any further lol

unfortunately all recruiters aren’t the same. I had to fill out background check forms and fill out info in NASIS for security clearance, I sent in my nursing license, references from civilian employment one from supervisor/manager and two from peers (for CCPD), I had to send in transcripts, I have tattoos so a statement for that, a letter of why I wanted to join, I had a recommendation letter, there’s two interviews you have to do (the recruiter will set that up for you), a couple forms just for commissioning. The CCPD Credentialing has taken me 3 1/2 months of waiting so they are very time consuming.

This is exactly why I'm dropping out of processing with the Navy which makes me sad. I'm processing with Army instead which is offering Special Pay and/or Loan Repayment.

I really wanted to join Navy but from the way the recruiter pessimistically talks about my package, I have a feeling I won't get in.

Talk more in depth with him/her. I'm sure all of them will say "in one year you can fill up the FNP billet" but ehhhh I'm not too confident that will be a simple process.

Yeah I've been texting/emailing about the checklist but no response. I think he's waiting on meps and for me to reach 90 days out of orientation before he goes any further...... boo ?

sorry I may have misread your time earlier. CCPD isn’t going to clear you until you have the time under your belt so they will have to wait to submit the forms until you are 90 days out.

CCPD took almost a month and a half of waiting to see if they were going to credential me so that will add time to the process.
