I have been following the thread for FY 2013 Air Force nursing and realize that many of the clinical nurses, including myself, were made alternates for FY 2014. The only information I have received from my recruiter is that I will find out sometime in April or May if I am selected or not. Has anyone received more detailed information about the upcoming boards? What is the likelihood of selection for us alternates?

I am also interested to hear from anyone currently serving as a clinical nurse in the Air Force who can describe the day-to-day life and current news regarding the nursing specialty. I am 28 years old, have been an acute care RN at a level I facility since 2008, served seven years in the Army National Guard, and am a family man with two children. My wife, also an RN, and I are excited that I am an "alternate" for FY 2014 because it seems likely I will be selected. We have anxieties about active duty because I have never served on active duty.

Thank you Brewmedic and ffemt!!

We are from GA so we are worried about the big move but excited for a new adventure. I don't like cold weather but my husband is orginally from Ohio so he can teach me how to survive.

Hey group,

Letter of acceptance and security clearance paperwork submitted and waiting for the official orders to come down on my "conditional commission." I will be headed to COT in January and then off to the ICU at San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). Only concern I'm facing now is housing (learning that it can really suck to be a single guy going into the service), but from what I've learned things have a miraculous way of working out in the end.

It looks like March COT and Little Rock AFB.

hey Capperon - I can help with some info about housing in San Antonio. I've been here 3 years and in my 3rd place. lol. Chosing your area and commute is your best starting place.

For the alternates: I don't understand why a good candidate in ICU would be placed on an alt list! We are critically staffed in ICU per AFPC. Just keep trying. Good luck!

anyone have any good advice/things to pass along about Eglin ED?

There seems to be a great deal of knowledge on this forum. Can someone please answer a question for me? I'm prior enlisted Army with a BA in International Studies and a BSN. My first degree was right after the Army and I didn't do all that great. My GPA was probably a 2.5-2.8 ( I just remember it not being very high). My BSN GPA is a 3.5. If and when I apply, meet with a recruiter, etc...will I have to average my first and second degree GPAs together?

When they were assessing my degrees it seems like they only looked at my nursing degrees, but I could be wrong. As long as you have an average of 3.0 or better you're still qualified. Hope this helps.

Midinphx,

My only speculation on that is that there must be a lack of available funding to hire extra active duty nurses. Civilians must work out to be cheaper.

tacomaster,

When I applied, they ask you for your nursing GPA. That clearly seems to be the most important thing. However, they also ask for transcripts for every single college class that you've ever taken. I took completely unrelated classes at a community college back in 2007 and they wanted records for those too. While those non-nursing classes might not matter as much, they definitely take those into consideration.

Perhaps you'll be at a disadvantage, compared to a flawless applicant. However, you're definitely eligible to apply based on your nursing grades, and I would think your prior service would make up for it.

tacomaster,

Do not be discouraged about your GPA! I was selected first time with a similar GPA and beat out numerous applicants who had higher GPAs. They look at your package as a whole, not just one item and give it a rating being 1-10. They will then start the elimination process and go back through packages rated 7 or higher and so forth. They do like prior service but again that will not guarantee selection. I wish you the best of luck!
