I have been following the thread for FY 2013 Air Force nursing and realize that many of the clinical nurses, including myself, were made alternates for FY 2014. The only information I have received from my recruiter is that I will find out sometime in April or May if I am selected or not. Has anyone received more detailed information about the upcoming boards? What is the likelihood of selection for us alternates?

I am also interested to hear from anyone currently serving as a clinical nurse in the Air Force who can describe the day-to-day life and current news regarding the nursing specialty. I am 28 years old, have been an acute care RN at a level I facility since 2008, served seven years in the Army National Guard, and am a family man with two children. My wife, also an RN, and I are excited that I am an "alternate" for FY 2014 because it seems likely I will be selected. We have anxieties about active duty because I have never served on active duty.

How did you get the letter, mail or email or recruiter?

Thank you

It got a word doc via email. It was part of a letter of acceptance (LOA) that I had to sign.

Have you already sent in your paperwork for your background check?

I signed the acceptance lettet today and my background check was sent. My recruiter says the check could take up to two weeks, then it's commissioning into the reserves and waiting for official orders. I will be stationed at Travis afb California. COT is January.

How was the process applying over at Travis for reserves? I will be doing the same thing in a couple of years hopefully. Any pointers on what they look for or things that will make me more competitive?

I am commissioning active duty but during the three month wait until I leave for COT, I have to commission into the reserves. I did talk to a reserve recruiter in case I was not selected for active duty. The application process for the reserves is similar to active duty except less competitive in the Denver area

So I got details today!! Going to COT March 4th then to Whiteman AFB. Don't know how I feel about moving to Missouri but here we go!!

The positive is you will be near the B2 spirits. The negative is the humidity. It is a good area that is close to farm land and an Amish community. Other than the humidity, it is a good place to live.

Oh I see. Thanks for the info.

Has anyone heard when the next selection board will be?

Based on my last application, when I was wait-listed, it should be sometime in February; the packet would be due in January with results coming in March. Unless they have changed things, they have two FQ (experienced) boards and one additional NTP board (new grad) per year. The NTP was July-ish this year.

You will be right between both Kansas City, MO and St. Louis and both cities are amazing with tonnes to do. Head a little south into Northwest Arkansas and enjoy the Ozarks.
