I have been following the thread for FY 2013 Air Force nursing and realize that many of the clinical nurses, including myself, were made alternates for FY 2014. The only information I have received from my recruiter is that I will find out sometime in April or May if I am selected or not. Has anyone received more detailed information about the upcoming boards? What is the likelihood of selection for us alternates?

I am also interested to hear from anyone currently serving as a clinical nurse in the Air Force who can describe the day-to-day life and current news regarding the nursing specialty. I am 28 years old, have been an acute care RN at a level I facility since 2008, served seven years in the Army National Guard, and am a family man with two children. My wife, also an RN, and I are excited that I am an "alternate" for FY 2014 because it seems likely I will be selected. We have anxieties about active duty because I have never served on active duty.

JerseyGirl13,

I went to see my recruiter on Tuesday and he said that he is still waiting on some assignments (i think OR), so you are not alone. Hang in there!!

Taking a med-surg ntp slot is a great way to start. After 2 years, you are eligible to apply for the critical care fellowship program. Also- med surg slots fill all areas from peds to ER to tele floors and everywhere else.

have a COT date and first base assignment. Waiting on my security clearance to post as "already approved" and then a date to swear in.

Has anyone got their security clearance back yet?

I already have a security clearance through the Air Guard so not sure how long it will take those of you without one to get one.

So I had my interview for an AF nurse officer slot on Tuesday Oct 22nd. Does anyone know when the next board meets for selection? I was told by my recruiter that they meet twice a year. Is it typical to have to apply twice? Was active for 2.5 years as an aerospace physiologist and then transitioned to the guard for the last 7 years. This would be a huge step for me and my family. Really hoping this works out.

To current active duty nurses on this forum,

I was just accepted during the last board and have COT this March. I got a fully-qualified slot and just missed the experience cut for 1st lieutenant. Just out of curiosity, will I make it to 1st LT before my NTP counterparts? Or, is that credit just lost and I have to have 2 years time in grade like everybody else? My recruiter wasn't sure one way or the other.

Freedomfocused,

Assuming you have at least 6 months of full time experience as a Registered Nurse (RN) and are eligible for an FQ (experienced) slot, Feb and Oct were the last two dates. No clue if you aren't applying as an RN...some specialties do 1x per year while others do rolling applications.

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

If they do it anything like the Army, yes, you'll promote faster. I ditched my butterbar about four months after I came in to become a 1LT due to my constructive credit for my civilian time. I signed my contract as a 1LT, but when I got my orders, I was a 2LT. D'oh! Demoted before I started. :) That's okay, I'll pin on CPT in a couple of month, less than 3 years in. Not a bad deal!

jfratian how much experience do you need for the 1st LT cut. Currently I have one year (6mo. orthopedics/6mo CVICU). If selected at this point, I would walk in as an O2E.

Freedomfocused,

I am going in as a 1st LT and have 5 yrs experience as a BSN. I believe my recruiter said I was 1 yr shy of captain. I hope that helps.

The COT website is still down but my spouse found this 2009 COT list. This may not be most current but it will give us an idea of what we need and what to expect.

freedomfocused,

There's a somewhat complicated formula your recruiter will definitely have. It's not as simple as divide by 2. I don't have prior military experience like you do, and that makes it different. O2E is a 1st LT with an extra pay bump for prior military experience; I'll be an O1.

lunah,

Thanks.
