Future resume considerations

Published

I am just about to start my 3rd semester AAS. I came from a computer programming field. I no longer have a job, so I have a lot of time to study and am doing well in my classes. I realize that to become an RN I need to

1. Pass the course,

2. Pass the NCLEX and

3. Get a job.

About that last point....

Most employers will not even look at a resume that doesn't have health care experience on it. I not only have no health care experience, but currently do not have any qualifications to get a health care job: CNA, phlebotomist etc. (Our course was not approved to allow us to take the CNA certification after the first semester like some schools\states). Also, to get a job while in school, I would need a flexible part time position to work around my school schedule.

I did apply at one local hospital for a sitter position, but it quickly became apparent that as with all jobs, they go to those with networking contacts. I have none. I went to talk to the HR rep at the hospital, she was nice but not hopeful.

I do volunteer at another local hospital on an ICU unit, but don't think this will be enough to help with the resume aspect and that hospital doesn't do school flexible positions.

Should I agonize over this or just be thankful that I have time to study and pass the class and worry about getting a job later?

Any suggestions other than I am S.O.L.?

look at assisted living facilities.. im not sure of the laws in your state, but i live in PA and you do not need a CNA to be a PCA in assisted living. i found it easier to get a job there than at the hospital, and i get to give meds and do a lot less hard labor. i am also PRN, so i am only required to work one weekend a month (but i can work more if i want) and i am not given any scheduled hours to work, so if i need a day off, i just dont sign up to work that day. it is pretty awesome.

Thanks, I will look into that. Sounds perfect!
