Future plans after Nursing

I have plans to proceed becoming a doctor if I'm successful with becoming an RN first. My question is, a friend told me that if I want to go to a med school, I'd have to not take A&P anywhere else but I'm already taking it for Nursing, so would that look bad on me in the future when I decide to go pre-med?

I guess because they want a student to take A&P at a designated program for doctors. Like go straight.

I'm no expert, but that sounds ridiculous.

SO MANY students go into the medical fields (yes, MD too) who have switched from other majors, including sciences. Biology, A&P, chemistry are popular choices to have already HAD before going pre-med.

As for wanting you to be "fresh" before their A&P course, well....how different do they think the human body IS from school to school??

Can't quite fathom this one.

well, the way I see it you must take A&P for nursing so if they insist on it for med school the worst case scenario is you'd have to repeat it later. I imagine it would be easier anyway the 2nd time around.

It won't matter.

Med school won't care what classes you've taken as long as you have the prerequisites ( Biology I&II, Gen Chem I&II, Organic Chem I&II, Physics I &II, English Comp and Biochemistry at a few) and the MCAT.

They care that you've made stellar grades in whatever college class you took and have a competitive MCAT score (usually above 27, but try for above 30 for a state school)

Having A&P won't hurt, but once you get to med school, they will teach you everything you need to know about Human Anamotmy and Physiology.

I know English Lit and History majors who went to med school. I also know of a few BSNs who got into excellent medical schools.

First, I dont listen to students. If one person says something and I am unsure, I ask someone who knows what they are talking about. Unless that person is a med. student, they probably dont know what they are talking about anyway. Dont get discouraged. Check it out.

I agree with the above poster! Students usually do not have a clue. Why would you take the word of someone who is just like you? Talk to counselors and physicians. More classes and more education does not hinder you when you seek a different degree or profession. Especially if you are willing to learn the new profession and start from the bottom.

RN-BSN-MD is a route I seriously considered (before I realized I'm just too old @ 39 to put my family through that) and in my research I learned it really just depends upon the school you're applying to. Most will want you to do as much of your higher sciences at the university level as opposed to the community college level but if your grades are stellar and you do well on the MCAT, have the necessary volunteer experiences, have great LORs, you're a great candidate.
