Fundamentals test

coming up! anyone else had or having one soon? it's a quarter of our grade, so i'm all over study stack and my books. we get very little, if anything, from lecture (other than the ppt slide printout), so i'm not expecting mich that isn't in the book.

she gave us a study guide:

  • the role of florence nightengale (sic) in the nursing profession
  • the role of ana in nursing practice
  • what makes nursing a unique profession--how is it different from other health care profession?
  • the importance of accountability in the nursing profession and how is it maintained
  • the role of the nurse as a client advocate
  • the role of allied health care professionals and how their work combines with nursing
  • the basic premises of the ourstate nurse practice act
  • the difference between licensing and certification
  • what is the role of the ana's code of ethics--basic premise of the ana's code of ethics
  • definitions and examples of legal terms.

  • what is personal space and why it is important to recognize as a nurse
  • differences between aggressive, assertive, and nonassertive techniques.
  • therapeutic communication techniques!--what is "therapeutic" and what is "non-therapeutic"
  • examples of using validation communication
  • developmental aspects of communication to consider as a nurse
  • memorize and be able to use the abbreviations!
  • charting--narrative vs focus-dar
    • documentation of only what you observed as the nurse

[*]other types of documentation, i.e. kardex, flow sheets, etc.

    [*]legalities with computerized charting

    [*]traditional source chart records

[*]incident reports: reasons for and how to fill them out

that doesn't seem bad to me at all. i was actually expecting a lot more to have to cover. i mean, it's not going to be a breeze, but i think it's doable, especially with a long weekend (woo!).

how's your fundamentals class going so far?

I had my first test on Monday. It was nothing like yours though! Ours was on medical asepsis, infection control and hygiene!

Ditto! Our first fundamentals exam is this coming Thursday and its going to be on Safety, Infection Control, and Activity.

The safety portion covers restraints and things of that nature. Infection Control covers the infection cycle, hand washing, medical asepsis, surgical asepsis, PPE, stages of infection, etc. And the Activity portion covers mobility and the musculoskeletal system along with patient positioning.

I'm really confident with the safety and infection control but the activity portion is 100% new to me, so that's what I need to focus on the most. The exam will be 50 questions total, 10 from safety, and 20 each for infection control and activity.

Hopefully all goes well!

What would be good to focus on for the musculoskeletal system? ROM and what else?

Are you guys studying using NCLEX reviews and rationals or just the book?

"What would be good to focus on for the musculoskeletal system? ROM and what else?"

We need to know about tendons, ligaments, and joints w/their movements. So adduction, abduction, flexion, extension, etc. We also need to know the different exercise types like isotonic, isometric, and isokinetic.

Im using my textbook, textbook study guide, and I also have Fundamentals Success, and Test Success.

I'm just using my books.

are any of you required to take a comprehensive examination and the end of the semester for fundamentals?

we have to take hesi at the end of each semester, this is freaking me out.

Too many tests. Arggggh

I just got done taking my exam and we did a review immediately after. I got 42 out of 50 correct, so thats 84%. Hopefully I'll do better on the next one though.

I love review right after! We did that today (well, sort of -- it was an hour and a half later since they decided we needed a break from the test and held class between the test and the test review). There were a couple questions that I wasn't sure if I had answered correctly or not since I just didn't remember what I put, but I'm pretty sure I got either a 95 or a 99 :D It's too bad that this immediate test review is the only one we're gonna have all semester...the rest are all a couple days later.

Agreed! Its much better than having to wait days upon days to find out your score. Our instructor just posts all the answers on the wall with the rationales for each. We cant talk to any of our classmates as we review the answers but we can speak with her if we run across an issue with the posted answers. Apparently a couple students challenged some of the answers today and I'm extremely glad they did because now I have a 92% on that exam instead of an 84%.

I had already planned on challenging at least one of the answers but I had a class immediately after so I didn't have time. Thank God the other students had time to shuffle through their books and discuss the contradictions from lecture material and the textbook material!

My school posts our grades within 24 hours, but doesn't do the review of the test until a couple days later.

When we do test review we have a piece of paper that says our score and which questions we got wrong/what answers we put for them, and we can't have anything else out. No notes, no pens or pencils no extra paper etc.
