fundamentals exam

Published

I have my first fundamentals exam tomorrow..im really nervous..any advice??

From a nursing student that has taken the class, my advice to you is to read the questions twice until you understand what they are really asking you. Underline the important words such as first, most, initial, only, etc...then look at the answers and you would find two of them may be correct. Read the scenario again and ask yourself: are they asking me to assess, intervene or evaluate?

It would be helpful to know what topics will be included in your exam so I can help you more. But remember Maslow's and ADPIE as you select your answer. Good luck!

The topics are on infection control, health assessment, Nursing processes, older adult and vital signs

The best way to study for those topics is to go online and search for exam questions related to those topics. For example you an search Asepsis test on Quizlet.com and you can get questions and answers about standard precautions, transmission based, hand washing technique, etc...also you can find flashcards that can help you further in your studying.

Thanks so much

No prob! You can do this!

Good advice! All this! In addition to this I would add.. Know your normals! To know if something is abnormal, you need to first know what is normal. Knowing your normals across the life-span really helps with those questions about the elderly, etc. For example, a questions gives you subjective and objective data about a patient, and then asks what a competent nurse would do next. If you do not know if the patient's findings are normal or abnormal, it would be hard to determine the action you should take. This is of course just one example of a type of question you may run into, but this knowledge is important for your assessment skills also. Good luck!

Just took my first nursing exam. Waiting to find out the results. I know I got one wrong because of a typo...so maybe they will throw that one out. So scared right now to find out if I did badly...>92% is an A. >84% is a B and so on. I just have this overwhelming feeling of stupidity.

It's just the nature of the beast. Nursing tests are unlike any other tests I have ever taken. The type of questions are critical thinking, application based. They just instill a certain degree of doubt upon you after you are finished. My experience so far has been that I typically do better than I think I did. We normally have 50Q MC tests. I always go through and answer all the ones I am certain of first. I go back and then do the ones that I'm not so sure of. I always count how many I wasn't sure of before I turn it in.. Just can't help it. For example, I've had tests where I wasn't sure about 12-14 Q's out of 50, but then when I got the test results I had only missed 3 or 4.Hopefully you will be the same way in this case! You probably did better than you think you did. Good luck!

The scariest thing about these tests is that you cannot go back and change an answer. You can only move forward. I made a 91% which is a B. I was relieved. I like the format of the tests. It is set up just like the NCLEXRN.

Ahh I see. Our finals are on the computer and like that also, but not our unit exams. Since all of your exams are like that you should be more than prepared for the NCLEX! I kinda wish all our tests were that format too.. Can never have enough practice of NCLEX style format and questions. Soo close to an A! Congrats! You will get it next time!!
