Ft. Myers Nursing?

Published

I am moving to Ft. Myers and am interested in geriatrics, but will take hospital nursing . Anyone have info on good places to work? I sure would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Hello Kayzee!! I am not a RN (yet), but from personal experience I would recommend looking into Lee Memorial Hospital. The reason I say this is just a couple of years ago my husband was in that hospital for colon cancer. I spent some time there and was very observent, the whole staff was awesome!!!

Not only did they look after him but they really cared about my well being as well and were so kind, I noted that they were cheerful and seemed happy as a TEAM!! (that to me speaks volumes, after being in the heathcare industry for 15 years you put alot of regard into that).

:)

I just loved the way they could and WOULD reach out to my DH in his most fearful time, they were rays of sunshine in a dark moment, if I still lived on that coast I wouldn't hesitate!!! Hope this helps!! Good luck!!

forgive the typos.......I just had a LONG day....

I worked at Lee, it was the worst work enviroment in my 10 years working as a nurse. I recommend home health that is where I work now. Best Choice home care. they pay well to. $37 a visit and $60 and admit.

After living and working in Fort Myers for a number of years, I can say without hesitation that the community is very fortunate to have a number of quality hospitals as well as nursing homes and home health. There are PLENTY of job opportunites for nurses there and I can assure you that you will not have any problem finding a job that offers decent benefits and a decent compensation package.

If you are mainly interested in geriatrics, there are a lot of nursing homes in the community. HCR/Manor Care has a large facility there as does some of the other larger companies. But, you need to remember that nursing in Florida can be very different than in other States, especially in the nursing homes.

Good luck with your decision and I am sure you will receive a number of different responses to your question.

I've heard about lower pay here in FL... but in what other ways is it different? Just curious.

In the nursing homes, it can be difficult due to the State Regulators. They are very tough in this area of Florida .... been known to ride rough house on the nursing homes for little things. In addition, Docs in Fort Myers tend to be a part of the good 'ole boy network ..... that can make life on the nurse pretty tough at times.

the sue-happy state

I recieved my Fl. temporary licenses this week. I am wondering about where to get started on my CEU. Can this be done on a website or do I have to attend classes? I have heard that I will need to take a compatance test. Is this true? My husband and I have just bought a house in the Ft. Myers area. I am an LPN. I work in geriatrics, are there many opportunties in Lee County for LPNs? I would be interested in long term care or rehab. maybe home health care.:uhoh3:

Just got some information and an interview from Lee Memorial. I'm an ICU trauma nurse of 8 years, and I must say I'm very surprised at the pay rate here in Florida. I'm investigating options at Lee, whether to go to the Float pool, or sign on as staff in their ICU.

Has anyone ever worked in these areas? Apparently, their ICU float pool uses RN's to PCU, ICU and the ER. Their PCU ratio is almost 5:1! I find that quite surprising. The last facility I was pulled to our PCU, and the ratio was no more than 2,3:1. These patients are very sick, and most just stepped down from ICU! Just thought if anyone had any suggestions, tips or experience in this area, I would appreciate your feedback!

Sorry it took me so long to reply to your e-mail. I have not been in contact with Lee Memorial. I was hoping to do Home Health or Long Term Care when I got to Fl. I would do PRN if places were not to far from home. I just left the greatest job anyone could ever have, so my expectations are very high about any place I go to. Wonderful co-workers and my DON was the greatest. Pay wasn't bad either.

Nursing is my 2nd career. I have had my licenses for a little over a year. Except for clinicals, long term care is all I have ever done.

Will be in Fl. in 2-3 wks. Have not recieved any info about pay rates or sign-on bonuses or hours.

Thanks:uhoh21:
