Hi All,
I wanted to start a thread for the students applying to FSU in Spring 2012. I graduated from FSU in 2006 and am hoping to go back! Good luck everyone!
Nizzle,
For clarification my quoted 50+ hrs was a total of class time and studying time for me.
The time spent out of classroom really depends on your style. If you read every assigned reading and go all out studying then it could take up an almost endless amount of time. (honestly, from what I have seen I doubt there is a relationship between frantic obsessive studying/stressing and success in nursing school) You have to find what works best for you and what is sustainable for a year. I found reading to be helpful in the beginning because the test were knowledge/recognition based but as the courses progressed and the questions became more "NCLEX" like or prioritization/situation based I found reading to be much less helpful, so I stopped doing it. Also it depends on how you study. For the six week courses you really only have a couple days to study because the exams are every other week.
So the answer is...I don't know but you really don't need to be spending 85 hrs/wk, that is just inefficient! Will you maybe get A's? Possibly. Will you be so burnt out and miserable that you get sick a lot, hate your life and gain 20 pounds? Absolutely.
Now that I haven't answered that question at all.....breaks. Yes, you do get a breaks between semesters. We got one and a half weeks between spring/summer and three between summer/fall.
bjbbeauchamp, sorry to hear that you weren't accepted to FSU. Is the University of South Alabama in your list of RN alternatives. Have you researched their ABSN program at the Fairhope, AL, campus? If not, call and ask them about the Fall 2012 class. From Santa Rosa Beach, Fairhope is about the same drive time as Tallahassee.
Thanks for that info! I had no idea they had a campus in Fairhope otherwise I would have already applied as a backup! I was actually over there yesterday and stopped by and got information and a few numbers of ladies to call for questions! Thanks again;0) Your right about the distance. I timed it and it took me roughly 2 hours and 3o minutes which is about the time it took me to get to Tally!

Oh and they have spring and summer programs, so I will be keeping my fingers crossed I get into the July 2012 program, but also applying to a few others just in case, but she told me that they will be looking to accept 50-55!! Thats a great number!

DLuxe, thanks for the clarification and info!
I have more questions for you.
Will FSU CON allow ABSN students to complete the internship/practicum portion with a preceptor outside of Tally?
Are ABSN students completing the internship and attending lecture(s) during the same time period? Any of the classroom stuff have an online (distance ed) component?
Basically...can ABSN students with permanent address outside Tally, return home to live with family, finish remaining classes online and complete the internship in a healthcare facility that may offer future employment opportunities?
Thanks!

You can request an internship at a facility outside of Tallahassee (in Florida) but they have a list of facilities so if you had one in mind you could ask someone at the CON about it.
Your internship is the last six weeks of the program (our class is now doing it) and does not overlap with any course work. You do have some online NCLEX preparation requirements to complete during internship but they can be done from anywhere.
All other classes are in person only. They are small classes because they are ABSN student only. Besides that you are also always doing either lab work (can't be online) or are in clinicals (also can't be done online) at the same time.
You have to be in Tally for everything but the internship but many people came just for the year and then went home (Jacksonville, Pensacola etc) for the internship and beyond. They are pretty good at getting ABSN people the internships they want.
Hope that helps.
Is anyone in the spring 2012 program looking for a roommate? I was hoping our orientation would be earlier so we would be able to meet other students and maybe find a roommate but our orientation isn't until January, which is cutting it a bit close. So if anyone is also looking for a roommate in the program please let me know!
busy. class schedule varies...0800-1430 most days and 0800-1630 on a lab day. we had a ~1 hr break for lunch. there's always stuff to do outside of class...studying for tests, meetings, computer lab work, drug math, prepping for lab, group projects, etc.
outside class work is 4+ hrs/day.
clinicals started later in the year and are 0600-1430 a couple days/wk.

I received my acceptance letter to FSU ABSN Spring 2012!
More questions about what to expect...
So, would you say that in-class (lecture/lab/clinical) plus out-of-class time equals approximately 75-85 hrs/wk?
Is there a break (no lecture/lab/clinical) between the semesters, spring/summer and summer/fall?
Thanks!
