FSCJ Summer 2011 Accepted!

U.S.A. Florida

Hi Everyone!

Just wanted to start a new thread since the last one was getting soooo long. I'm very excited! Who's with me?

Ginnybee, I am probably going to put both of my children there for the Summer. I have heard nothing but great things about them :D

That is awesome! I have also heard only good things about them. My mother in law lives in Orange Park and is basically my guaranteed child care, but it's such a drive for me. (I live off St Johns Bluff)

Here's some info in case you haven't seen it yet!

How old are you kiddos? My little one just turned 1. :)

I have a 2 year old and a 5 year old. They told me a couple months ago that my 5 year old could attend the daycare, but he will be 6 in May... so I'm not sure if that is true

congrats! Here's a few tips I wish someone had told me:

Get your titers done asap. They may take a few days to come back.

You don't *have* to get the Hep B titer if you need to save money. You can sign the declination form even if you've already had the full series of shots.

Make sure your CPR class is American Heart Association certified. They won't accept anything else.

You can wait to buy your uniforms, polo, shoes, name badge. You don't start clinicals until week seven so you don't have to get them immediately. Same with the items you'll need in your pocket protector.

You do need a penlight, stethoscope, and blood pressure cuff by week two. You only need the BP cuff to take 30 BPs for health assessment class. Borrow one from someone or get a cheap one. You don't need it embroidered! Lol.

The Box of books from the bookstore is more expensive than buying from Amazon or B&N. It is the only way to get online assess to their skills videos so if you feel you need those... Some people swear by them and others never use them. Personally, I found the skills all on YouTube and saved the money.

Don't buy the Tabers book. You'll never use it.

Buy an old, dirt cheap med term book online if you don't buy the box. Seriously, buy one off half dot com for 75 cents.

You don't need the expensive dosage calc book either. The nursing tutor page on BB has everything you need!

Good luck!

Thanks HF2010! thats really helpful!

A few more and then I'll leave y'all to celebrate!

You do not need to buy the lab coat! You'll never, ever wear it. If you get cold you can wear any white or blue sweater or jacket.

Unless you are naturally messy or clumsy, you only need one uniform for term one.

Get a good stethoscope but you do not have to get the Cardiology III that is recommended. Littman has some good ones for 40-50 bucks.

Thanks guys! Im going to the work source office as my first stop today! Then I will look into the childcare! I have a 4 and 3 year old =)

Well I'll be heading up to North Campus in a few to get the drug screening thing and then will go to Financial Aid to check out the child care grant stuff. I'll be wearing a pink and white striped tank top. I'll also have my 2 year old with me, so if any of you see me, say hi!

I called fscj yesterday to ask about the child care stuff and they told me they weren't accepting anything until April. Also I called worksource and you have to go online first to fill out an application and wait until you hear back from them or something. Im going tomorrow to northside medical clinic to get the physical and titers and drug test. Also Im getting my fingerprinting done afterwards at the UPS store on Old Baymeadows rd. Today im working on background check, finger printing, and finding CPR class.

I got them both off of allheart.com. The sphygmomanometer was 70 I think. I got the Riester Ri- san Aneroid sphygmomanometer and it was 75 and I got the Littman Cardiology III stethoscope and it was 155.
