FSCJ Spring 2012 Hopeful w/???s

Published

Hi everyone. This is my first time posting here. I am in the middle of tackling the pre-reqs for FSCJ nursing program. I am really hoping to get into the SPring 2012 program (fingers crossed!!) But I'm a little confused about something.

I will be taking my last two classes in the fall, Micro and AP2. My advisor told me that I can apply for the program while I am taking these classes....my question is, if I apply to the program before the Oct. 1 deadline how will they be able to calculate my points for Micro and AP2 if I have not yet fully completed those classes? Will I have to wait until the next fall program? I am really hoping that is not the case, but I'm thinking my advisor may have given me th wrong information.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

You think it's frustrating to wait, wait until you're in the program and they wait until the last minute to tell you anything! ;) :nurse:

You can definitely do your BLS and flu shots now. Just don't do any of the other titers/shots yet.

Good luck everyone! :yeah:

Just curious...is it a 'requirement' that we get flu shots? I have already had the flu (positive for both A and B) back in the spring, so it seems to me that the shot would be unnecessary. I never get flu shots nor does my family...one reason is because of allergies. My son is severely allergic to eggs (carry epi-pen with me at all times). Also, I have an autoimmune disorder so I have always been a bit freaked out by the possible side affects. My husband, a former Marine, refuses to get the flu shots because he claims he always got sick after they gave it to him when he was in the military and he didn't have a choice. Anyway, you see I am not a huge fan of flu shots.

So, what say you gals/guys? Is it a requirement? or just a strong suggestion? also, I already had both strains in the spring, so would I even need it?

update: well, I really hope its not a 'requirement' as I have discovered it is not necessarily advised in Hashi's patients (I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis). I will talk to my doctor and see what their thoughts are on it, but I found this:

Richard Shames, MD, author of Thyroid Mind Power, Thyroid Power and a number of other popular books about thyroid and autoimmune disease, has said that he is careful about recommending the flu vaccine to his patients with autoimmune thyroid disease:

Generally, the people at higher risk should be concerned about getting the flu shot. But if you have Hashimoto's disease, having a flu shot is an immunological event. The determination needs to be made more carefully, then, because there is the potential for the flu shot to trigger the Hashimoto's into flareup or exacerbation.

wonder if I could get a waiver for it...I still want to know if anyone knows whether the flu shot is a requirement or not. :)

MandieStaz-

Good for you!!! This is my 2nd, yep, my 2nd time trying for the program!! I am just under 200 as well!!! Spring term I have signed up to take 2 classes that should replace 2 of my "bad" grades, which will raise my points to over 200, so I am FOR SURE not giving up!!!! I was going to take the CNA course, but was "advised" by a counsler to not, it's considered a lower "degree"....Anyways- I am not giving up!!! Hopefully I hear good news in a few weeks :) If not, then Fall of 2012, I am in there =) Good luck to everyone!!!!

I have Hashimoto's too. Last year was my first year to get a flu shot and I ended up getting sick...milder than the full-blown flu, but it was still unpleasant.

I had a baby 7 weeks ago and my Pediatrician has suggested that everyone in the house get vaccinated against the flu. I'll probably go ahead and get it even though I'm skeptical.

So I think we are down to 2 weeks right! As I check the mail box almost running every day just in case :)

I am thinking by Thanksgiving, or maybe wishful thinking.... :)

It would be nice to know before Thanksgiving :) Does anyone know, is the letter sent regular mail? or certified? Just curious.

I just looked at last yearsposts. Most people started to get their yes letter Nov 23 and 24th.

I am thinking regular mail since everyone seems to mention the letter showing up in their mailbox. (I could be wrong though since I am still a nursing "applicant" and not a nursing "student".)

You know Mandiesweetie81? I don't know what I was thinking ....lol! Yea, I'm pretty sure its comes regular mail too :) I'm surprised they don't send it certified. Nursing schools across the board act like its all top secret. Granted, I understand why...because then 500+ people will be calling and/or emailing them randomly on their status. Still, does it really need to take 8 weeks? Oh well, just going with the flow :)

I thought the same thing, but as a college employee, I did some asking around and found that yes, unfortunately it does take most of the 8 weeks. They don't touch them until after the deadline and then there is only one person who does all 500+ applications and all of the information provided (NAT scores, grades, pre-reqs, etc) has to be verified. Then everyone has to be ranked and days/nights must be sorted, etc. There have been 33 college business days since the deadline passed - for her to be finished already, that would mean completing 15-17 applications a day if she does no other work during the day... and that doesn't allow time for the initial sorting and weeding through applications. It's a lot of work for one person. I'm nervous and anxious also, but I keep telling myself that in the grand scheme of all I've had to do so far (and all that is still to come) 8 weeks isn't too bad. Having said that, I still hold my breath while checking my mail every day ;-)

I'm surprised there are not more postings on this thread! Normally right around now there are at least a few people posting things about denial letters and cutoff points. I am pretty sure since I am well above 200 I will at least get days but it's realllly quiet on here! Anyone else notice that as well?

I know...I thought the same thing. Although, when I called the program they seemed to be firm about notice being given 8 weeks from Oct. 1. In no uncertain terms, that's what they said. Now, that would put the notices starting to come around Dec. 1. Still, if figured that was just their 'generic' answer to give everyone "8 weeks...8 weeks...8 weeks" you know? Oh well. I'm ready to start hearing from anyone who received SOMETHING, ANYTHING...lol. Even if I don't get my letter, I can't wait to start hearing at least others are getting theirs! :)
