FSCJ Spring 2014 hopeful

Published

I haven't found anything for spring 2014 hopefuls so I wanted to put it out there and meet any other applicants. I am currently taking chem over the summer & I am enrolled in micro for fall. I took my NAT yesterday. I will be applying in Aug for a spring start with 204.32 points. I am hoping to make it in spring rather than having to finish micro and need those points, pushing me back to summer start. Almost 2 years of pre-reqs and sweating it out, it's almost our turn to apply  I am stoked!!!

got it..thank you so much..and I emailed you back to let you know!

Hi kjkkm,

I actually took the Nat today and wasn't to happy with my scores at all. I am kind of embarrassed really. All of the sections I scored very high in are not the sections I need to apply. I did very well in Reading Comprehension, did about average on Academic Aptitude but sucked in the Information in the Natural Sciences section. I already know I am weak in science so I just have to work a little harder than the average person to get it. I was a little discouraged but tried not to beat myself up too bad over it. I have taken Chem, A&P I & II back to back and now taking Micro but it seemed like there were only a few questions that even applied to those classes on the test. I am going to take the test again in September which I hope to do a lot better because I will have time to really study. The only thing is, a lot of the study guide books that I have at home that I looked through today after the test were so detailed that I felt weren't even helpful after taking the test today. It's a little frustrating so if anyone has any other study material you can suggest solely on the science section besides the Arco book in the college bookstore, I would very much appreciate it. Maybe I will rent a 8th grade Biology book from the public library and study that. I kind of took the test today to see where I was and to see what I was up against. If I scored well I would have been super happy but now that I didn't, I have to kick butt these next three months to make it happen. Luckily the school takes the highest scores out of both tests so I hope that helps me.

Does anyone know where clinicals are held? I'm looking at gyms near North Campus so between classes and clinicals I can work out.

Also, who are all my fellow mommas? How are you planning on being successful in the program while still making adequate time for the family? My boyfriend will be a stay at home daddy while I'm in school, but I still feel responsible for housework and cooking I guess because I prefer my way much more (: My daughter will be about 6 months so I still hope to continue breastfeeding while in school, which is a whole other task. But I am curious as to how fellow classmates plan to balance school, personal time, family time, and maybe even work. Thanks in advance for responses!

Hi mabamj1,

I heard they are at different hospitals and it really depends on what your class picks and what clinical you need to do that particular semester. The only gym I know of on Dunn Ave is Bailey's which is on the side by 95.

Also, I'm a mommy. I have two kids, a boy and a girl ages 3 and 6. I have a very supportive husband so I will mainly rely on him to help with everything if I get in the program. I think when you have the mindset that you have to get "it" done, whatever it may be, you make sure you find a plan to make it happen and I think that is why alot of people are successful.

I noticed how well you did on your Nat. Do you have any tips on the NS section? I am hoping I can get some good feedback since I did so bad on that section but my main goal now is to study that section as much as I can and get ready to apply by October first. Best of luck to you and your family!

Mabamj1,

I think the clinicals are based on like a lottery type picking. So you wont know until it's time to pick.

Also, I do believe North campus has a gym on campus. I know they have a track and a pool but I'm pretty sure there is a gym back by those too.

Welcome to the new hopefuls!! oh my gosh :woot: For some reason i stopped receiving emails showing any updates, so I just thought this was sitting here quiet. I'm so excited lol I need to catch up.

Welcome mabamj1,

Congratulations on your baby girl :)

And your score. That is awesome  you are in! I am def interested in a study group. Like everyone else, i run short on time having 3 girls but its important we make time to do well. I have not done my CPR certification, i am planning on getting that done in July. I have heard St Vincent's is the best and/or cheapest. Where did you do yours?

I'm so glad chem doesn't count. That is my worst class!! :sarcastic:

Aye_Ne,

OK, so now that your first time is out of the way and you know what to expect, the pressure is off, right?! I think the anticipation of the unknown causes a lot of stress. I didn't find any of the study guides helpful and i had three. Science was my weakest area as well. I haven't taken micro & I had just started chem. So, the great news is you get another chance and you will rock it! I am going to believe in you, we're all in this together.

Did you try the elimination process on questions you weren't sure of? Like, rule out what you could when possible then guess? Don't be discouraged! Look on older threads and the points accepted after the initial seats were turned down are not as high as you would expect. Applying doesn't hurt you so you are going to re-take the NAT and apply, right?!?!! I have read many many posters saying they brought their score up by 10 or so points the second time around. Or better. SOOO don't give up!! ;)

My girls are 4,12 & 14. I have been working and in school doing my pre-reqs. I also do the cooking, cleaning, etc. My husband helps some, but i like the laundry done just so, etc etc. I think when you want something enough, you work hard to get it. I have sacrificed football games (my daughter cheers), visiting my family, going to the pool, park etc with my husband and kids, to study or take night classes when day classes weren't available. It wasn't easy but you push through knowing it's only a moment, moments pass and eventually we'll have a degree that betters out families. We can do it!! When i get really frustrated, as corny as it sounds, i repeat to myself ... "and this too shall pass ... and this too shall pass .... " And we'll lean on each other. No-one else will understand the stress and balancing act like our nursing student peers. I am stoked!

Hi kjkkm,

I can agree that the pressure is completely off the test now. But, now the pressure has moved on to another area, lol, trying to prepare for my next shot. I am definitely going to try the test again but depending on how much I approve will depend on if I apply. I didn't try process of elimination. I was just so worried about that darn clock that it completely made my nerves bad. Plus, I should have brushed up on my science, which I will do next time around. My sister in law took the Teas test for UNF Nursing and agreed to help me study but being that she took the Teas and I am taking the Nat, it's kind of hard explaining to her what I actually need to prepare for. I can definitely agree with alot of people that the Teas and Arco books are too indepth for the Nat. I need a Science for Dummies or a study guide to tell me exactly what to study. I know alot of people say the science section was easy, but some people struggle with it and lucky me, I was one of them. But I am not giving up!
