FSCJ/FCCJ Fall 2011 Hopefuls

Published

I know this is early, but I am sure there are Fall hopefuls out there for 2011.

Anyone out there yet, or am I just overly eager?

:lol2:

F,

I definitely want to go to UF for my CNM! There are a lot of online programs, but I don't feel confident enough to go through it like that, especially with a program so close to home. I've read that Frontier is the best program, but I've got a family here.

As far as my BSN, not so simple. ;-)

I want a full time program and I really NEED an in class setup, so I'm thinking UNF. UNF is down the street, a good program, and it is more affordable.

I'm going to burst if these letters from FSCJ don't come soon!

Today is the 1st day of our 8 week wait...brace yourselves! :eek:

Does anyone have info on affordable CPR certification classes and/or immunizations?

I'm sure your have the same paperwork, but I'll throw it out there just in case. :-)

  • Advance pt Transportation on Beach BLV, Jax (904) 278-4274 ext 227 has a CPR cert for FSCJ students costing $20.

  • St. Luke's (Jax) (904 278-4274 x227) & NE FL State Hospital (MacClenny) (904 259-6211 x 1205) both have cert for $20 as well.
  • Recert prices are generally lower.

As far as the titers, oh gosh it is going to be expensive. I've been told that Lakeshore Medical is one of the more reasonably priced clinics for that.

Hope that helps,

S

Thanks sugarbee...I am close to both of those locations for CPR certification.

I want to start researching my OOP for the immunizations..does anyone know what exactly is needed? I would hate to get shots I don't need.:clown:

I got mine a while ago through Memorial Hospital. They offer day and evening classes, which was very convenient for me. I think it was about $40. That is about the average cost of what you will find ($40-$60). The class was very simple, but still informative. The instructor there is very nice and laid back and wont let you walk out "failing". He gives several chances to correct your exams you have to take at the end of class. He just wants to make sure you know the right answers and leave there knowing what to do in the case of an emergency. I think the class schedule says it is a four hour course, but we were out in about 2. Id recommend checking it out!

Wow, 20 bucks?? Thats CHEAP!! Awesome! I still loved my class though! lol. And that was for the BCLS certification thats needed or just CPR?

And yes, I have heard the titers can cost a few hundred bucks. I do wish theyd give info and more time to get everything together and done!

I got this from a previous post,

"You can check Solantic out I got everything I needed from them and total it cost me about $280. For the money I paid I got Varicella, MMR, DTaP, HepB, and PPD, it will be cheaper if you get the titer for the HepB because the titer is only like $30 versus getting the full series of shots which is $73 per shot. I chose not to do the titers for the other shots because some of the titers were WAY more than the actual shot. They also will do a physical for like $55. Oh and also check out I believe some place on Dunn Av (maybe Baptist Primary Care) and see what price they can give you for what you need. Check the thread on here under Regions, Florida and you may find a thread that has more information or additional places that you can compare before making your decision. I hope this helps."

And this is what is required for UNF,

"Items Required if Admitted

If admitted to the Regular Prelicensure BSN track there will be several things required by the first day of orientation (Taking Flight):

  1. Proof of current CPR certificate for adult, child, infant, and 2-person;
  2. TB skin test or chest x-ray (negative for active disease);
  3. Immunization (with titer proof) against Hepatitis B;
  4. Positive Varicella (chicken pox) titer (vaccine, then titer if necessary);
  5. Health report indicating that there is no health condition present that would prohibit providing patient care;
  6. Background check (fingerprinting required as part of this)
  7. 12 panel drug screen

Note that these materials are not required to apply; rather, they are required if admitted to the program. After receiving one's RSVP for his/her seat in the program, the School of Nursing will send out orientation packets via email."

I'm assuming it is about the same.

It is only for CPR cert, and honestly I'm concerned of $30 worth of hidden cost. You might be required to purchase a book or mask. I plan to call later this month. There is a list of recommended places in the application packet.

I also want to start some of this, but we need to keep in mind that most of the titers must be done within 3 months of starting the program. For now, I'm planing. ;-)

Xo,

S

We need the BLS certification. I guess I will have to ask questions before registering for the class.

As far as the shots, "titers must be done within 3 months of starting the program." that is good to know! I am also just planning. I hope these are covered services under my insurance (UHC) with little Out of Pocket costs.

I think all these requirements should be listed on the website too. This list is almost as long as the pre-req's! :uhoh3:

The class by APT is now $25 for FSCJ students, and hold classes 4 times a month. If you work Monday-Friday with weekends off, The American Heart Association branch here in Jax offeres BLS for Healthcare Provider classes every Saturday for $50. It's a little pricey, but may be convenient for those who can't get off on the weekdays the other classes are held.

Unfortunately insurance doesn't usually like to cover titers. :(

Physical Exam (has to be dated within lik 2-3 months of when you start the program)

Student Health Certificate signed by you (form will be in acceptance packet)

Copy of Current D.L.

Recent picture (has to be passport photo, go to wal-greens $8.99/2)

Current CPR card, (has to be American Heart Association professional health care worker with AED-hands on class)

PPD screening (for TB) has to also be within 2-3 months of beginning program

You have to provide titers for MMR, Varicella, and Hep B (or you can sign a declination form for the Hep B, the form will be in the acceptance packet)

You have to get TDAP shot and a Flu Shot

You will also be required to obtain a background check, fingerprinting, and drug screen (all the info as to where to get everything and the prices will be in the acceptance packet)

Now on to equipment:

all white uniform from Meridys (you can buy the shirt used through the FNSA on campus and white scrib pants from anywhere!)

Blue Polo from Florida Specialty

White leather or leather-like shoes (nursemates.com)

Khaki pants

white lab coat from meridys (optional, I have never used one!)

Skills Kit, don't remember the name of the place that sells them but they are around 91 bucks

Stehoscope

BP cuff

Pocket protector (white) sold in the FSCJ bookstore

FSCJ Name tag (sold from Meridys)

wristwatch with second hand (cute ones on nursemates.com or allheart.com)

Clipboard with pocket to put care plans in while in the hospital

and a WEEKLY PLANNER!! There is so much going on you will have to write everything down in a calendar so you won't forget to do something!!

All total for the shots, background check, uniforms, equipment, etc... I spent about 800-900 out of pocket.

Hope this helped :-)

Are you sure we need BLS? I don't see that anywhere in the packet or past posts.
