FSCJ Fall 2014 hopefuls

Published

Hello everyone, I did not see a post for the fall 2014 semester, so I wanted to get it started. I applied to the 2014 summer semester and now I am waiting on my acceptance or denial letter. I am starting this forum just in case i do not get in for the summer. My total score right now is 169.96. I have 97 points for my classes and 72.96 points from the NAT. I am currently taking statistics and humanities, in hope of getting an A in both of them to boost my score up to 178.96. I made a C in A&P 1, my first humanities class and PSY1012. I also made a B in college algebra and that is what got my score down so low. I hope that the low cut off score trend continues to give me a good chance of getting in. The last 3 semesters were 175.96, 187 and 187. I am preparing to retake the NAT in late May to be in time for the June 1st deadline with plenty of time to study for the NAT. I look forward to meeting you all, and hear how things are going for you, so we can encourage and support one another.

Can we use those TI-80 graphing calculators or does it have to be a basic one

Has to be a basic calculator. No cell phones allowed either. Walmart has them for a $1. some profs have them available if you forget yours. If they don't have any the bookstore sells them for $8! So don't forget your calculator!

Thank you! So does the schedule change a lot through the first semester? Or is it pretty much the same even when clinicals start.. I always heard that you shouldn't make your schedule outside of the program final because of last min changes

Do we have to get a Taber dictionary? My mom took a medical terminology course and has Mosby's medical, nursing, and allied health dictonary.

Congrats you guys on getting in. I am also currently finishing up first term (n&w). I'm sure you have heard but the program (administrators mainly) are disorganized and they do not have good communication. BUT, if you know this and accept this ahead of time, it will help with frustration. There is enough stress just getting everything together and having 4 classes in the first term to add to it with frustrations that you cannot change! It sucks sometimes, but it will all be worth it in the end :-)

The skills kit you don't need for a couple of weeks into the semester for Techniques. the only additional thing it has is a pen light . I personally did not buy a jacket because you are never allowed to use it. lol. If you are cold natured, you can wear white underarmer or something that fits close to the skin under your clinical white uniform. Anyone with visible tattoos on their arms has to do this anyways. I would not buy your pants from Meridy's. Obviously name tag and shirt. I went to the uniform outlet. ALSO, a suggestion, i first bought Cherokee brand scrubs. I wore them once to clinicals and hated them. lol. I bought greys anatomy and such a huge difference (much softer). ;-) Polo's and khakis you won't wear for several weeks into the program. The nurses association will sell used tops (clinical and polos) at orientation for usually $5.00 a piece. I bought 2 used polos that looked brand new for the less than the amount i would have bought one new one. ;-) I was hopeful for a used Uniform top, but didn't have any in my size, but i do know people who did get lucky to get one. A cheap calculator is what you need and are allowed to use, no scientific or anything like that. Just brush up on your fractions and such. I was so freaked out by the first dosage calc test because it was on the first day of class only a week after orientation, and i'm terrible in math and did great. As long as you do the stuff on the info they sent out, you will do fine.

And make sure you do CAREER SOURCE. it is amazing and pays all tuition and Required books. You can still get your loans and or pell great sent to you if you include a hardship letter when you do your intake appointment. As long as you make under 25.00 ( i believe is the correct amount) and hour, you pretty much qualify.

The most amazing professor is Professor Burns. She teaches Pharm, but is also just very knowledgeable about the whole program. She is awesome. I love Professor Boyd as well, I had her for techniques. She also teaches Concepts. She's great too.

Good Luck and get ready!

The tabers comes in the box of books you are required to get. you can't pick and choose which books you get. You have to buy the package. (career source will pay for all of this)

I use that dictionary a lot. Especially for care plans.

It changes per semester, but so far does not change during the semester. Clinicals is part of your Techniques grade. So on the days you would have techiniques, is the day you would go to clinicals (first semester specifically speaking) Like for night and weekends our techniques is on Saturday. So right now we are doing our clinical rotations on Saturdays 6:30 to 1:30. class was 8 to 1:30 before clinicals started on campus. Not sure if there is much difference in days, but that is how it is for n/w.

We had a couple last minute changes a couple days before the 1st semester started, but once it got going things stayed the same for the most part. 2nd term has had lots changes all through out. There are several people in my group who work and their jobs have been pretty accommodating.

I saw there is a Taber dictionary phone app.. I guess it would be okay until we get the actual book

As for the job thing.. I'm glad to know its doable with work and school together just takes more time management

If you get the book there is a code that gives you free online access for a year.

That is good to know:-) I thought the app was free but then it said 39.99 - so I'll wait lol

Does anyone have suggestions for laptop or tablets we should use? Do they tell us what to get or can we use whatever we have?
