  1. The best advice I can think of is keep practicing until you are comfortable. Try doing a head to toe assessment on someone at home or with another student. Give them a list and they can let you know at the end what you missed- this is probably better to do with a student so they know what to look for. You mentioned the nurses not doing complete assessments. Their assessments are probably complete but they've just become really efficient.
  2. Hi everyone, I know the wait is rough. Our deadline to apply was June 1 and we started getting letters July 18. Believe me, you will be really busy once you get accepted so try to enjoy the time you have now.. Good luck!
  3. I have done that😄 if I hear someone say something really 'interesting' (misinformed) about nursing I'll think "ooo if you posted that thought up on allnurses, you might learn a thing or two". Edited because I hit reply too soon.
  4. You're welcome! Hopefully the "ladies" will just stay home for a while.
  5. Another thing I did was write down everything that was due on a calendar (and keep it somewhere you can see easily). Cross off days as you go or keep a countdown until the end of the class. Sometimes it helps to see your progress if you get overwhelmed or frustrated like halfway through. Med surg wasn't that bad just really busy and it did go by fast. Be prepared and all but try not to get too stressed out yet because it might be easier for you than what you're hearing.:)
  6. As the other replies said- there are a lot of disease processes. It was a lot of work but honestly I liked the clinicals more in med surg than fundamentals. I feel like I learned a lot. It was like the first semester classes all came together for the big picture. The class is a little intense so you have to be on top of the reading and your time management. We also had a separate med surg class (it was 8 weeks). If you have an NCLEX review book do the questions related to the disease processes in each unit. Review your anatomy/phys during your break before the class starts. Everyone is different but that helped me a lot. You can do it- just take it one step/one week at a time if it gets overwhelming.
  7. This- especially since you can evaluate him. Wouldn't the unprofessional comments he made (from the original post) be enough to have him written up or at least talked to?
  8. To OP I'm sorry you have to deal with someone acting like that. I hope a meeting would help. This reminds me of something that happened -sorry if it's long. Last year at the beginning of my program, I was at work and heard a customer loudly proclaiming he is a nurse now but saying things that didn't add up (trying to sound like he knew everything about nursing but I've never heard an RN or LPN talk this way). I found out that he hadn't started a program yet but just got accepted. Then he proceeded to insult other nursing programs (including mine) so I wished him luck on his way to *eventually* becoming a nurse. Had to be careful what I said being at work, but it was getting ridiculous. I wonder how clinicals went for him with that attitude! I'm still a student, so I can't really give advice. People like that are not only difficult they can potentially hurt a patient. I can't imagine acting that way now or after graduation especially at a new job.
  9. I think it's great you handled that situation so well! Those women must be extremely unhappy in life to say such nasty things about someone who is having a good day with her baby. I don't post on here a lot lately - but what they did was just ridiculous I had to say something.
  10. Shoes- as long as they're white and not made out of material that fluids can sink through. I have Skechers go walks in white with no problem, they're really comfortable but they started getting dirty after a few months. As long as you keep those clean you should be fine. You can go with white leather if you want too. I don't know any kinds or brands offhand right now. Key points- white/resist fluids/comfortable.
  11. Hi everyone! I'm in term 2 so I thought I would come by and say good luck :) I know the wait is hard - I remember the day I got my packet getting through the last few hours of work before I could check the mail was rough haha. But once you get the packet you will be running around to get all the titers, physicals, background checks, etc. so try to enjoy the time you have now! Phoenix_Fire was on our thread from the fall to help us out too.. I think someone already said it but students that are terms ahead are definitely supportive of those coming in.
  12. Does anyone have suggestions for laptop or tablets we should use? Do they tell us what to get or can we use whatever we have?
  13. That is good to know:-) I thought the app was free but then it said 39.99 - so I'll wait lol
  14. I saw there is a Taber dictionary phone app.. I guess it would be okay until we get the actual book As for the job thing.. I'm glad to know its doable with work and school together just takes more time management
  15. Thank you! So does the schedule change a lot through the first semester? Or is it pretty much the same even when clinicals start.. I always heard that you shouldn't make your schedule outside of the program final because of last min changes
