FSCJ Fall 2014 hopefuls

Published

Hello everyone, I did not see a post for the fall 2014 semester, so I wanted to get it started. I applied to the 2014 summer semester and now I am waiting on my acceptance or denial letter. I am starting this forum just in case i do not get in for the summer. My total score right now is 169.96. I have 97 points for my classes and 72.96 points from the NAT. I am currently taking statistics and humanities, in hope of getting an A in both of them to boost my score up to 178.96. I made a C in A&P 1, my first humanities class and PSY1012. I also made a B in college algebra and that is what got my score down so low. I hope that the low cut off score trend continues to give me a good chance of getting in. The last 3 semesters were 175.96, 187 and 187. I am preparing to retake the NAT in late May to be in time for the June 1st deadline with plenty of time to study for the NAT. I look forward to meeting you all, and hear how things are going for you, so we can encourage and support one another.

I know how you feel. I applied for the summer term and found out they had me in the system as out of state which gave me zero chance of getting in. Supposedly it has been fixed but I'm still on edge about it because it's not the first time they have "fixed it". So fingers crossed! But even with a 209 I'm sure you're in!

with out of state they dont base it on the points system?

I calculated my NAT score several times. I have a feeling they pulled the wrong number, like another section of the NAT. It's the only way that makes sense to me cause it was only 6 points. I had an A in statistics and an A in college algebra as well. So that's not a possibility. To be honest with you, I have A's in all my classes even that go towards my AA. I did take DEP a few times when I was younger and stupid but they were withdrawals and the other grade not passing. But if they take the highest grade, that wouldn't make sense either. In any case, it still doesn't matter. If they have calculated it differently, they should've spoken to me. If my score was calculated incorrectly and it was below the cutoff, I wouldn't mind. But my score was above the cutoff with that discrepancy. When I went to the school, they were extremely rude to me and actually embarrassed me. There were students behind me, younger than me, turning in their applications. She looked me in the face and said " if you didn't get in, just turn in your application." I asked, "There's no one I can speak to to at least explain how it was calculated." She proceeded to say, "NO, we shredded all the applications from summer term. If you didn't get in, just turn it in." Shredding my application isn't a big deal. I go to FSCJ, they have my grades and I have my NAT score, the original paper. They could still sit down with me. She refused to and proceeded to humiliate me. I've worked at two different hospitals in jax for almost 4 years now. I have experience and I've worked with the students who come in during clinicals to teach heart rhythms. I was extremely upset. I'm just venting because you're the first person who cared about my story.

thats terrible. I would have came in with back up. Did you calculate the NAT from a different section to see every possibility. I am just scared something like that will happen with me since I only have a 196. Your score is high now you should have no worries. I am only working part time as a nanny. I don't want to look for any full time work because if I get it I couldn't handle a full time job. I hate they they are soo inconsiderate but that's how a lot of colleges are. They deal with a lot of people and you are just a number too them.

Since they shredded the summer applicatoins they probably have no record of why they gave you the points you did but if you had the letter you received stating what they said your points and a copy of your transcripts ontop of test scores they should see you.

No they way it was explained to me was they are a community college so they only look at in state first then if enough people don't apply they look at out of state, but I doubt there has ever been a semester where that has happend.

I had my letter I received from them, my transcript and the official NAT scores. She told me if I didn't come during the dates specified on the letter than there was nothing else I could do and no way to speak to a nursing advisor. But, you'll be fine. There could be validity to their calculations. In which case, that's fair. I just wanted to know how it was done and if it was done fairly. I won't make a big fuss of it anymore if I'm accepted because I know I worked hard for my grades and my acceptance. If I'm not accepted. I will be livid. I was nervous about my residency paperwork because I had to fax it. It wouldn't let me reapply online because technically I'm still a student there. It'll have been a year since attending courses there at the beginning of August. Technically November. I didn't take classes at FSCJ this past Spring or this Summer. But, I faxed and emailed new residency papers on the Friday before the deadline and again on Saturday before the deadline. On the Monday after the deadline, I received an email stating they had received my papers and were evaluating them. But it was sent and dated before the deadline. And it really shouldn't matter, I hope. It was sent before the deadline and I'm still within the year mark for this Summer.

196 is a high score. The cut offs haven't been higher than 186 in a few semesters. The highest I saw in the past 3 years was 196 I think. But it was 185 for summer and 176 for the spring before that. The scores are sometimes lower for Fall because more students are accepted as opposed to the 96 seats for Summer.

I worked full time at a hospital here, 3- 12 hour shifts and some people can do it and go to school full time. I have so much respect for those who are able to do that especially with children. I did full time for a year or so and it was hard for me to focus. I work only part time now 2-12 hour shifts on the weekends. I keep my position here to be able to apply as an RN when I finish school. I've worked as a health unit coordinator and a electrocardiogram monitor tech.

And purple185, you're right. They won't pick students not from Duval County sometimes. I work with RN's who said they weren't accepted because they live in Clay county so they went to JU or UNF instead.

I have been attending fscj since last summer and have always lived in florida (and always in duval). I didn't even think about sending in residency paperwork. Is that just for people who have just moved or just started school at fscj?

also from what I read the fall seems to always have a slightly higher point rate except for one semester...but it really just depends..i dont know..

I really hate that they are making us wait so long. I feel like because they are making all these changes to the nursing program they might make us wait the full 8 weeks..she told me august 1st when i turned in my application..thats like 8 1/2 weeks..thats soo crazy

What I was told by the nursing committee at FSCJ was that it simply doesn't have anything to do with how well your grades are or what your GPA/total points may have been. They have to admit students from all over Jacksonville. She said and I quote "sometimes you just may be that unlucky person who lives in the wrong part of town, we have to pull from different areas of Jacksonville to have diversity in our program. You may fall in that 10%." Considering I lived at the beach most of my life this fact shouldn't disqualify me from entering a damn program. I am willing to pay your program fees and go into debt and as an American citizen cannot be educated because I had lived in a specific section of the city? What is this 1950? It is down right unfair.

So I went back to school (FSCJ) in Fall 2013 also taking classes Spring 2014 and just realized I'm classified as a non-Florida resident again. I've lived in FL since 1992 and, with the exception of 2002-2003 when I lived in Orlando, been a Duval Co resident. I just sent Ms. James an email and faxed another residency statement over to the welcome center. Could I be rejected because of this and why do I have to continue sending this in while I'm taking classes there?
