I had an appointment today to get registered for classes for fall, I was going to register for my Pre-Req's (A & P1, Pharmacology etc) and register for the CNA class as well. I had EVERYTHING figured out, and my appointment scheduled.
I got to my advisors office and he'd gone home for the day... but reffered me to someone else. (Ok...EXCUSE ME!! You just left when you still had appointments?!?! )
So I sit down in this other guys office and explain to him what I want to do,but before I can even finish explaining he interupts me and says "I'm sorry but you have to apply for the nursing program first." I know for a fact that is not how it works, so I tried again to explain my situation and he then interupted and told me that you can't just go for your ADN you have to first get your LPN...
That doesn't even begin to sound right to me, not after all the research I've done... so I told him I just wanted to register for these classes (handed him a list) and that I would keep my current major for now.
He then told me he can't even register me :angryfire and gives me a LIST of phone numbers, about 25 of them and told me to ask if any of them could help me!!
So with that being said... 1: If I have to get my LPN before I can get into school for my RN then I'm going to say screw the ADN and go for my BSN... 2: I'm trying to figure out who I need to go to to complain about this moron! 3: I'm going back in to talk to my advisor on Monday and let him know how upset I am!

Hi. I have no real advice for you but I know everytime I call to speak to an advisor, I get a different story depending on who I ask. It is very frustrating. You have some good ones and some bad I guess. I know that colleges are different but as far as mine goes:
1.You have to be finished with all prereqs before you can apply to the program
2.You do not need your LPN first. It is a 4 block program that after the first 2, you can stop and be an LPN, or you continue with the other 2 blocks and become an RN.
That is my school anyway, I know they all do things differently. I know my sister in PA would have to repeat everything to become an RN if she became an LPN first.
Sorry I can't really help but I suggest talking with the top advisor and not do anything until you are sure what you should be doing.
Good luck,
Jess

What you had planned on doing seems correct. Your right, the Advisor is an idiot.
I know for a fact you don't need to do the LPN first! (I work with several girls in the program!) but you do have to finish your pre-req's before you get into either program! (And I asked to keep my current major and just take the pre-req's...but this moron didn't seem to get that!)
Thanks for listening to me vent :) I'm just so frustrated!

Does your school only offer LPN to RN bridge?
(Just trying to figure out where the "idiot" was coming from.) lol
Sometimes I just want to say, "Ya know, you'd think they would hire people that has a college level mentality to advise college students!"
Good luck! :)
They have an LPN program, and RN program and a LPN Bridge to RN program! (That way they can accept the max number of students into each class!!)
It drives me batty that they don't have compitant people working in the advising offices!

:angryfire I envy your patience with the idiot. Please let us know the outcome of your meeting with the original advisor.
Some advisors are so stupid, when I first contacted my college an advisor told me that she couldn't help potential nursing students..... we'd have to talk to the program director instead. If so, then why does she/the advisor have the job??

When I first started Ohio State they assigned me to a general advisor and when I went to see him about classes (that I already scheduled) instead of adding another class he dropped me from all of my classes and unenrolled me from school! I didnt find out until I went to log into the website to check my balance....then it told me that I needed to "see my advisor"....come to find out I wasn't a student anymore at OSU!!! I was pretty mad...and by that time all the classes that I was in were filled up! UGH...needless to say I switched advisors immediately! Talk about an idiot! :angryfire
OMG! I would have needed a Valium. I bet you wanted to slap him :angryfire!
lol..that is the understatement of the year! I got pretty mad but managed to maintain myself and i went in there and A. demanded a different advisor and B. made them put me back into the classes I was dropped from even though they were full!
I really admire your ability to have stayed cool & calm. I hope that you at least got an apology for what he'd done. Glad you got back in your classes too :)
ELKMN, I admire you for getting the situation straightened out!!
I did call the dean of students, who got me in touch with the nursing coordinator who is off for the summer, but agreed to meet with me because she felt bad about the whole situation! So I'm meeting her on Tuesday:D
