I see. I don't think your odds is better by having been in the lottery before. This will be my 5th time in the lottery.

What are your points?.....

This is your 5th time applying?? girl, you could have paid a little more money thru private school which prob. would have cost you $35k-$37k, but your income potential would have been double that when you become an RN making that money that you are missing out on making because you're waiting for Fresno City to allow you to be in their RN program! You are losing out on approx. $80k-$120k per year just by waiting when you could have been an RN 3 years ago. You are way too dedicated and loyal to this Fresno City program.

Who makes 80-120k in their first couple years???

A while back they use to keep track and by your 4th year in the lottery you were automatically selected.

It must've been a very long time ago because I checked the first time I applied. They no longer do that.

I don't know my points exactly but I have always been eligible. 80 on TEAS and 3.6 overall GPA.

Lot's of nurses do! that averages to about $60/hour.  That is the normal rate for RN's in California. And with the registry, it could be $80-$100/hour.  My point is, the amount of time wasted on waiting to get in, you could have just applied at a private school, got in, got out, and started making money immediately and pay off your student loans within the first year! while others wait and hope to get in and they are still making LVN pay.  That's my point.  Waiting 5 years and still waiting because of the lottery system to just get into the program to become an RN is just odd to me.  After 2 years of applying and waiting, I would have just paid the money and become an RN.  I applied first time at Fresno City.  We will see. If I don't get in, then I'm going to apply to another school for next year. and that's it. If I don't get in, in the next 2 years at community college, I'm done. I will be paying the extra dough to just get that license and be done.

I agree with you completely. I applied to like 6 colleges this time around but if by any chance I don't get in. I know there are other options such as SJVC and National University as well since their applications don't close until May 14th I believe and by that time I'll get all my results except for one

I’m sorry but you fail to take into account that sometimes life doesn’t pan out exactly as we hope. What if someone is unable to work after graduation due to life circumstances (illness, serious injury, caring for a loved one). I’m not willing to take on that kind of debt knowing it would be impossible to pay back in the event something major happens.

I get it, life happens. I'm not taking into consideration life circumstances etc. that is a personal thing.  I'm speaking in general.  No issues, no obstacles etc. etc. And keep in mind, your loan can be paid off by the govt if you work in an underserved area. I know people who went thru the whole LVN program, only to realize they didn't want to be LVN's, so it happens.  This is just generally speaking.

Are those the only two that you know of that the application closes in May? Are there any other RN programs with application period ending in May or June?

I know that national's last date to apply is May 14th. For SJVC their application opens in the Fall of 2021 and they will accept students for the Class of 2022. I know there is Gurnick academy too but personally it's not a good fit for me. These are the only ones I know of which are around the Fresno area.

I don’t know that it’s that easy to go to a private college and become an RN just because you’re willing to pay. You still have to go through the process and get picked. It can be just as competitive I think. I applied to SJVC 2 years in a row and last year, nothing. This year I was an alternate. Maybe next year I’ll get picked? I don’t know but it’s still a wait LOL I try to stay positive by thinking if it doesn’t happen now, it wasn’t my time. And if it never happens then it wasn’t meant to be.

Yea, that's too bad. You have to stay positive for sure.  Hopefully, you will get picked.  But, you know sometimes one closed-door can open another door for you.  just keep your head up, shoulders back, and stay charged! You got this whatever "this" is for you.

That’s the going rate in NORTHERN and SOUTHERN California, you’re not making that much as a new grad in Fresno for sure.

Also it’s not just tuition, it’s living expenses, medical insurance and expenses, and I get zero financial aid, plus I don’t think those private colleges teach nearly as well as in public institutions. They’re there for a profit...

I’m lucky to have a good job, granted nursing even starting in California is $10-15 more than I make and my job is based in Southern California, I’m just lucky I don’t have to relocate right now and can put away a ton of money.

I also come from a family where outside of maybe a home and a car and occasionally charging your credit card to keep your credit up, where taking out loans was taught as bad. I’m lucky to have gotten a bachelors loan free as is, and I’ve lived at home for the past year working my current job and put away a majority of my paycheck so I can pay all of FCC out of pocket plus have enough to live.

How much are new grads making in Fresno? The RN's working for the state are making close to $50/hour, and Kaiser pays close to $65/hour.

Maybe $35-45 at the most, Fresno has one of the lowest cost of living in California, so naturally they pay less, you still are able to live a great life, and it would be even better debt free xD. Probably can save for a down payment on a home if you had no student debt your first year.

The state pays well for any job, being in an entry level job in the state pays really well. Outside of the state though it’s more in the realm of like $35-45 if you look up salaries in Fresno.

In Fresno you can live in an okay apartment making like $15 an hour, where my job is based, $21 (something I got some sort of like 30¢ raise can’t remember the exact number) is not enough to even get a tiny studio. It’s the reason I’m trying to get into nursing school because the progression at my job will be slow and I’m 27 and would like to get my life together.
