Fresh Grad RN looking for a job in San Diego

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi,

I have no idea where to start in my career. I just got my RN license and dont know which hospital in the San Diego area offers a good new grad training for a new grad job. I am also confused which field I should be getting myself first into..... but what really interests me is O.R nursing, so.... I really need help and advice to those who can shed light on this matter.

Thank You!

there is scripps down there... Im not too familiar with the area but I knew someone at Scripps LaJolla and really liked it

Hello, I can't help you with the San Diego area...but about your OR interest...very very few places hire new grads directly into the OR. Most OR positions require 2 years acute care or even critical care experience. Don't give up hope though. There may be some exceptions to the rule! :D

Regarding to the OR position, it depends on which hospitals you are applying! City/County hospitals are willing to accept the new kids on the block! However, not even the L.A. County Medical Center is hiring at this time!

So does Scripps

Paradise Valley Hospital in National City is hiring and they are willing to train new grads. There is no new grad program but they train you with another nurse.

Most will tell you that med/surg is a good place to start off. Good luck! :)

Thanks for the leads, I'll look in Paradise Valley. I have applied twice in Sharp, Scripps, UCSD and Kaiser. I was looking in Alvarado also but they don't have it. I looked in Sharp Chula Vista bcause they need bilingual nurses, I am hispanic but they told me twice, they need experienced nurses. So far UCSD is in the process to hire New grads for Feb 09, the rest already hired last month. Thanks again for the info.

I had forgotten about Alvarado! I was going to post back to say that I think it is easier to get hired on at Paradise. They changed hands about a year and a half ago and many of the staff jumped ship. They reorganized and began to hire LVN's and it looks like they are hiring in all areas. And they really need bilingual staff too because there are so many Hispanic patients.

I think Sharp likes Magnet status and looks for the BSN and Kaiser is hard to get into unless you know someone.

Good luck to all in your job hunt. :)

so one year later...did you ever find a job and how was your experience? right now...im in your shoes. btw, happy new year.

i am definitely one of you guys... LOL i just passed the boards and having a hard time getting in for a job-- i thought the hospital that i spent my externship on will hire me after i get my license but i guess their new grad program is currently closed and looking for someone with atleast 6 months... WTH!! that is my dream job first of all and SHARP too... so now i'll wait for PVH response and apply for the spring new grad program for Sharp... i need to pay my bills :bluecry1:... even nursing homes and rehab doesn't have any job openings for RN!!!

Can anyone tell me how much ICU nurses are getting paid in the sandiego area?? My family is hoping to move there and I am a new ICU nurse.

The Scripps system!!!! Loved Scripps Mercy!
