Freaky female anatomy

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I'm starting to get a complex. In recent cath attempts, I keep running into patients who have stuff prolapsed, holes in strange places, and generally not at all textbook anatomy. I confirm with a fellow nurse, who marvels at my ability to get patients whose urethras refuse to reveal themselves. Am I the only one?

Just had to add a couple wierd ones for you. Couple years ago as a m/s nurse had to cath a guy and his meatus was between his scrotum and member....not even hypospadia.

More recently as an ob nurse went to do a straight cath for a ua and thought I had lost my mind when i found the meatus above the clitorus....I looked at that and said to myself "no, cant be" but sure enough it was....

"no, cant be"

:rotfl: :rotfl: LMAO!@ That just struck me as funny for some reason! I guess we can add it to the top ten list of things you don't want to hear during a pelvic exam!

Heather

I am w Micro....can't resist a thread like this.

Worst one: A 400 lb plus female. One NA holding each leg, one person holding up the belly fold, one person holding the labia apart, one person holding a flashlight, and ME (lucky person that I am) crawling between the patient's legs with the cath in my hand. Still was an almost blind jab and .......BINGO...urine on the first poke! Gadszooks.....no way it was sterile, but we did the best we could.

I am precepting a new grad RN and we went in to cath a female. New Grad's first solo cath. Patient was 86. Separated the labia and it was like a picture in an anatomy book! PERFECT ANATOMY! I told the grad, "We will CERTAINLY have to find you another patient to do, because there is NO WAY you will ever see that again!!!" :roll

Now I am just scared to do my first cath

I have a friend with double uterus(es?) too.

She had twins, one from each uterus.

I was in OR during the cs (in the 32. week), never saw something like that before! Nobody had, it was all documented (of course she was asked beforehand) on videotape.

She needed quite an amount of blood afterwards and her Ob advised her, not to have any more children, she won't, believe me, she won't!

Twins are 14 years old now and doing fine, but my friend had a hard time the first few years.

Take care, Renee

Would it be... uteri??

Had a 600+ male (Our scales top out at 600--later found out he was 990) we had to cath. Took 7 of us to try to find his member..........2 holding each leg, 2 holding belly rolls, and 1 trying to find his boy parts. After a very frustrating 20 minutes, the lucky nurse trying to find his member reached in with the tweezers included in the cath kit (the ones used to hold the cotton with) and pulled.

It is amazing the things we see as nurses isnt it???? Had a new grad LVN who had never done a cath on anyone. But she told me her instructor told her it was easy because the meatus would be sitting there winking at you......geez I dont remember any that were that obvious...had to do blind jabs up inside plenty of uteruses, though. Then had the elderly man come in from the LTCF and the doc wanted him cathed...the 2 LVN's i worked with called me to the room...cause his foreskin had scleroses and his meatus was the size of a #2 pencil lead...geez wonder why he couldnt urinate???? He had to be circed at the age of 80+.

Gotta get to work and see what kind of wierd anatomy I might run into tonight....

Several years ago I saw an octogenerian from Czechoslovakia who had some dementia in her twilight years and lived in a SNF here in CA. This unfortunate woman had a very poor output in her foley, so after irrigating didn't improve this grootiness, I removed the cath and attempted to reinsert another. This woman had been surgically altered. Upon close inspection it was clear her privy parts had been cleanly and skillfully removed with a scalpal. Her labia minora lips had been brought together and sutured right at the urinary meatus. the CNA and I just looked at one another dumbfounded. the MD(a woman)was kind enough to come in that night and insert the cath. It was astonishing to me as i had believed that "circumsicion' was only done to woman of African descent! What a shock! I wanted to ask her about it but she was not lucid enough. She did tell me she had had one son, however.

Can I just say I love you guys? Hearing your stories just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside thinking how many others have also been puzzling and scratching their heads as they are hunched over with their flashlights thinking "WTF" lol :). That's the coolest part about this board - sharing experiences and knowing you're not alone :).

Heather, a yes, I guess that is right about 1 uterus 2 uteri.

I never saw a woman from Cech. with FGM either, it is not only on African women performed though, also on Arab and Asian ones.

And please, pretty please, don't call it "circumsicion", it always should be called: MUTILATION.

Thank you, Renee

I had a patient in Nursing Home like this, eighty-six, white no religion stated. Makes you wonder doesn't it? :( :angryfire
