Ok, I'm a bit frustrated with all of these posts telling us that we shouldn't go into nursing because we need a job and steady income. Sure, I do like to help people, but I need a steady job even more. So, I decided to post a poll to see if we can get some honest answers.

I went into nursing because I like the challenge of having to think and I enjoy working with people. I didn't really feel a "calling" to nursing so to speak, but once I found out more about the job I knew that it was what I wanted to do. I though about medicince as well...more money, more autonomy, very indepth knowledge...but I didn't want to go to school for that long, and their hours really suck in most specialties...After I found out about nursing, I leared about the need for nurses and liked the job security that I could have, I like the fact that I could travel if I wanted to, the fact that there are many options and areas of nursing so that if I got "bored" or burned out in one area I could try something new within the same field...I didn't go into nursing for the money but we do make a steady wage (which will hopefully continue to go up)...it is easy to pick up extra days or travel to earn some cash for a vacation or toy that you want...Seeing my husbands job, I am also thankful that I don't have to bring paperwork home, or if I miss a week I don't have stacks of paperwork waiting for me when I come back...Some nurses complain that they leave late from work--no one likes to be put in that position, but I always shake my head a little because my husband and his father (who own a business) go to work, come home and still have to do work...ick! There are a lot of bonsues to this profession...as with all professions it also has its downfalls...but for me, it works well!

I need a job, and a steady income. Seriously. Anyone who says different isn't telling the whole truth.
I'm becoming a nurse because I want to help people. It's just that simple. And that's the whole truth. :)
Ok, so if you weren't paid for that, would you still do it? Seriously.

Steady income, JOB SECURITY, job diversity, I love medicine, that "calling", great healthcare benefits, to name a few. I know the pay isn't in the 6 figures, but I'm only making $100 a month right now. LOL

I wanted a profession were I can help people and be challenged. I was always interested in the Medical field and science. During my year long quest to find my "calling" I was pleased to find we have MANY fields and/or specialties in Nursing...the list is endless...Therefore, you're constantly learning and growing in a your career. I worked for many years (great pay) in a stale, unchallenging environment...with many unhappy people...and male dominated...Being that I'm still young and motivated (28) I decided it's either now or never...I have a supportive fiance, new house and son...they're prepared for the studying maniac I will become...:chuckle
Bless my family!!
a steady job and income, with no fear of being outsourced.

My thoughts exactly.
Well, here's the truth, and nothing but the truth. I need a decent job.
I ain't no Mother Teresa. I ain't no saint. If it didn't pay, I probably wouldn't do it (unless, by some remote chance, I become independently wealthy.)
I've been laid off from more jobs than I can count. (A slight exaggeration, but not far from the truth.) At this age (42), I figured I had to find something where I wouldn't have to look over my shoulder all the time, waiting for those pink slips. Nursing seemed to fit the bill.
I was pre-med in college (many moons ago) so I have always been interested in medicine. But I've never had a "calling."
I actually think I will be a decent nurse, at least. But I really have no clue if this will work out. At least I study a lot and try to learn as much as possible.

I honestly don't know how I fell into this. When I graduated from high school I knew that I wanted to work in the medical field, but couldn't decide what to do. My friend from high school said that she was doing nursing, so I decided to do that since I couldn't make up my mind. Since then I've been working as a CNA and now in my 3rd semester of nursing school and have no regrets.
Some other reasons I decided to do nursing was job stability, interest in medicine, and the fact that the pay is decent.
