Fort Worth Question?

Well I start LPN school here very soon and me and hubby started talking about where we wanted to live in the near future....we live in Denver and moved here 2 1/2 years ago. For some reason I started joking around & said we should move to Texas. Then I started looking around on the internet and was in SHOCK when I searched Fort Worth and saw the housing prices!!!! We have been looking at them for the last 2 hrs no joke!:wink2:

The housing prices are AMAZING compared to Denver & Portland(we grew up in the Northwest) Here in Denver 250k wont buy you hardle ANYTHING! I was shocked what it could by there. I even was looking at 135-150k and was in shock what that could by!

For some reason I thought there was a few LPN's on these boards that were from the Fort Worth area. Can you offer any advice on the area and what it is like there? Also if you dont mind what would I be looking at for a new LPN in that area?

I went with Century 21 Mike Bowman Realty, located in Euless.

Tell the real estate agent you only have $110,000 and see what (s)he is able to conjure up. When I went house-hunting, I saw decent 4 bedrooms for under $100,000 in areas such as Saginaw and Watauga.

I can not tell you HOW much you have helped me! I am really excited to go down and take a lookise around Fort Worth(We defintly wont be going Jan/Feb) I am still in somewhat a "daze" as silly as it sounds when I look at the prices in that area because they are soooo good compared to the Denver area.

Now to work on that Texas accent HAHAHAHA!

How about that i went to JPS LVN school as well....

Before you go to LPN school there, if I were you, I would research what it will take to transfer your license then to Texas.

The job market is good there. I went to school at John Peter Smith Hospital School of Nursing and worked there after graduation. Great Hospital to work for for the experience. You will see everything. It is a teaching hospital. I don't think they have a nursing school there anymore which is a shame.

I have been in Arkansas for the last 4 years now and I don't really know the $$$ range in Ft Worth anymore.

I have lived here all my life been a LVN all my life too..lol anyway the job market is abundant here if you are interested in the LTC area or physician offices. There are some hospitals that hire LVN's but only a few .. unless we are talking about rehab then you have Kindred , Life care and Health South. I was offered a job a Kindred for a little over 21/hr and have been told that the wage is comparable at the other rehab hospitals. I was making $25.54 at my last LTC job but I had been there forever and I was a supervisor. The going rate for what I have been offered here in the last couple of months is around $19-22/hr range. I live in the country about 25 south of Ft Worth and the rates around this immediate area are just not that great and tend to get worse as you head south. As far as houses South West Ft Worth is probably the best I have seen for housing pricing and just general community atmosphere. It is just my personal opinion but I cant stand Arlington , it is just too congested for me. Now, I love the Benbrook area and have seen many homes in the area for $99-110K that are really nice and have larger lots. I have to live in the country cant stand congestion and people living so close to me I could shake their hand out the window. I want to be free to run naked if I want..lol . I bought a 4 bedroom 2 bath home in West Ftworth in 1998 for $55k it was on a half an acre and I paid about $1900/year for taxes. Sold it in 2000 and now live out in a little town called Joshua ( I was born and grew up here) anyway my Husband went to Engineering school and I knew we were dealing with forever in college so we bought a Mobile home for $6K and did some minor fixing on it and I just pay the lot rent of 250 a month. Look into the Burleon area as well you can get a nice house on larger lots and you are minutes from Ft Worth and have a easy access to all the major stores and still live in a smaller community ( however, the town is growing rapidly). I think if you look around you can find a nice home cheaper than 150K. This is a great area to live in and it has lots of opportunities... Good luck and let me know if I can help.

Ok so here is a burning question for me. How worried are people in that area about tornados? The dallas/ft. worth area (and the surrounding smaller towns) are at the top of our list to check out as well if we end up wanting to move away from the Pacific NW area after I graduate RN school. I realize the weather will be quite different and that is fine, but I am a bit concerned with it being on the border of "tornado alley". So what is the real scoop on those storms in Texas?

A tornado last struck Fort Worth either in 2000 or 2002 and blew the windows out of the Bank One skyscraper. No homes were damaged, though.

A tornado struck Van Alstyne last year and did some damage. Van Alstyne is a North Texas town near the border with Oklahoma.

So the possibility looms every year then... Do homes come equipped with the underground bunkers? Do you have to have earthquake insurance for your homes and if so is it fairly reasonable or a major expense. Are there warning alarms? Thanks in advance, I realize that every area has its issues (I can see Mt. St. Helens erruptions clearly from my living room windows and we have minor earthquakes every once in awhile but i am used to that scenario...not hurricanes or tornados lol).

Born and raised in Portland and moved across the river about 10 years ago. We like it out here but it is getting really expensive and crowded as well without enough employment and wage growth. So we are in the early phases of coming up with some moving ideas if we decide we have had enough. (Eastern wa is also on the short list. The Tricities area is growing rapidly and is quite inexpensive and we could still be near our families out this way).

Yes.

Bunkers and basements are unheard of in this area.

Do you have to have earthquake insurance for your homes and if so is it fairly reasonable or a major expense.
This part of the country is not known to experience earthquakes. My homeowner's insurance premiums are about $870 yearly here in DFW. I was paying $350 yearly in California last year.

Are there warning alarms?
I'm unsure.....
