Fort Worth Question?

Well I start LPN school here very soon and me and hubby started talking about where we wanted to live in the near future....we live in Denver and moved here 2 1/2 years ago. For some reason I started joking around & said we should move to Texas. Then I started looking around on the internet and was in SHOCK when I searched Fort Worth and saw the housing prices!!!! We have been looking at them for the last 2 hrs no joke!:wink2:

The housing prices are AMAZING compared to Denver & Portland(we grew up in the Northwest) Here in Denver 250k wont buy you hardle ANYTHING! I was shocked what it could by there. I even was looking at 135-150k and was in shock what that could by!

For some reason I thought there was a few LPN's on these boards that were from the Fort Worth area. Can you offer any advice on the area and what it is like there? Also if you dont mind what would I be looking at for a new LPN in that area?

We were looking at houses today again on the internet and Chad was wondering why non of them have basements....do you happen to know why they dont?

I have no idea. A real estate agent might know the history of why these homes don't have basements. :)

I'd rather not have a basement, anyhow. An unfinished basement is a way for snakes to enter the house. :eek:

Homes in Tx don't have basements b/c of the soil type. In the summer months when it is very dry, the soil shifts frequently which can lead to problems in the basement foundation. At least that's what our realtor told us. You are supposed to water your foundation in the summer months to prevent damage to the foundation. When we bought our home new in 2004, the builder made us take a 2 hour class on foundation maintenance before we closed.

Also, just FYI the reason that homeowners insurance tends to be more expensive is due to a rash of black-mold claims in the state in recent years past.

Ohhh I DONT want a basement! I would rather have a open area upstairs of a 2nd living room. We found some AMAZING houses I have saved on my computer so we can give the agent for the type of houses we are looking for(I would post them on here but I dont know if I would get in trobles posting house pics in a nurses message board!)

I am TERRIFED of snakes:uhoh21: :uhoh21: :uhoh21: :uhoh21: I grew up in the country and once saw a garden snake and stayed inside for a good week when I was like 10! I kid you not if I saw a snake in my house I just might move out!

Born and raised in Portland and moved across the river about 10 years ago. We like it out here but it is getting really expensive and crowded as well without enough employment and wage growth. So we are in the early phases of coming up with some moving ideas if we decide we have had enough. (Eastern wa is also on the short list. The Tricities area is growing rapidly and is quite inexpensive and we could still be near our families out this way).

We lived in Tigard, Lake Owesgo, & Seaside Oregon. I love PDX but dont think I will move back that way. My Inlaws live on Bull Mountian in Tigard

I, too, am horribly frightened of snakes. Thank goodness I have only seen one snake here in Fort Worth. It was a dead snake on the side of the road.

I did see a turtle today about a mile from my home. :)

That is very intersting! I didnt know that about the soil, but figured it had something to do with it:wink2:

I wonder if everyone takes that 2 hr class? I know mold does scare me a bit(but that is everywhere!)

I am ok with turtles...not my favorite wouldnt want them in my house but outside ok:wink2:

I don't think that everyone has to take the class, especially not if your buying pre-owned. I think it's just a few of the new home builders that require it. I believe it's b/c they give you a 20-year foundation warranty.

Let me see if I can give you some info on the weather situation here in the DFW area.. I am a weather freak and I mean a FREAK.... I do have all the stats for this area involving tornados, hail damage , wind and rain but i cant get to it right now as a I am getting ready for work. So I am going to pull this out of my head. The Ft Worth tornados happened in the late 1990's or very early 2000. I was in the library downtown when it hit . This twister bobbed around and pretty much sustained at a F3. This system also hit arlington with a F2. The Lancaster (Dallas area) was hit and I believe twice in the 1990's and later in the 2001-2002 area. Where I live in Northern Johnson County was hit in 1993 with a F1-F2 and my house,me and the babies rolled with that one. There are public warning system in each major city. I cannot speak for the smaller towns in the area. I am talking about the loud warning sounds you hear if your standing outside. Then of course you have the warnings on the TV that come across the bottom of your screen. Weather radios are very popular in this area I had one at one time but dont anymore cause I have access to every dopplar and tornado trackers on my desk top. What I have observed in my many years of being a weather freak is the majoirty of the bad weather tornado warning and the major hail issues always are North and West. As for basements ...I love basements. There are still some homes here that have basements but they are the older homes and are very few. My grandmothers house has a basement. They do build underground homes here and thats my future goal.. More than anything here in this area you have storm cellars. Ill give more info later gotta run to work....

I didn't have to take any class. As an above poster mentioned, only a few of the new home builders require this course.
