I noticed that some of us here are career changers... or older students. Just wondering what you used to do before you got bit by the nursing bug? What made you decide to go to nursing school?
I'm an engineering clerk - I pretty much sit in front of a PC in a windowless office all day and type and/or read schematics and circuits. BO-RING! Nursing will be my first college degree, though. I've got about 16 hours of pre-reqs left before I apply to the clinical/nursing courses for a BSN program.
I'm a former pre-med who realized she didn't want to sacrifice her family for her career... I also consider myself very much a "people person" so figured that nursing would be a good fit for providing empathic care and being a healthcare professional. :)
does the radiology bug count? if not, I am a CNA and I thought about going into nursing at one time! I have been a waitress, office assistant, debt collector, cake decorator and I currently key zip codes for the US postal service. talk about BORING. but hey the money is good and the hours are school friendly. Only 2 years and I'll be an RT.

Who me? I'm hoping to get accepted into the BSN program and begin nursing courses/clinicals in summer of 2004. We'll see how it goes, both with my bank account (eek!) and my pre-reqs! LOL
Hi Angela! I recognize you from the Radiography boards! I think I finally made the decision to pursue nursing instead of RT and premed... talk about a long, hard decision. I just can't stay away from the RT and premed boards too, though! It's like an addiction! LOL :)
Neat idea, Agent. I'll keep my eye out for that one. :)
I think I need to correct myself - if I get in, nursing classes begin summer 2004, clinicals don't actually begin until fall. I just hope I get in!
Angela - LOL! That's okay, I completely understand the feeling! I'm a lurker on so many BBS's it's not even funny! :)
I'm not sure what happened with me? I always wanted to be in medicine, or a scientist when I was little, but no one encouraged me. I took what I thought would be an easier route and went on to study writting. I hated it. So, I became a Go-Go dancer, I also got the op to be a CNA (stuck with the dancing cause it paid the bills!), then I decided to go to medical assisting school and someone told me how bad it was and that I should be a dental assistant, welp, I hated that too! Finaly I decided that I wasn't going to listen to anyones advice and took the pre reqs for nursing and found it wasn't as impossible as I thought it would be.
Hi All!! I was an ex-administrative assistant for a government contractor. Wanted to get into nursing 5 year back. Decided not to because of the $ issues. Then, decided that I'd never have enough $ so applied and was accepted in Fall '02. Starting my second semester of nursing school the 25th of August. I'm ready to be an RN too.
Originally posted by talldollNYCI'm just finishing my pre-req's for an accelerated BSN. My first degree was in Theatre/Dance!
Yay, someone else with an arts background! My first degree was in music. Wanted to play professionally, but decided that it just wasn't the life for me.
I've worked for the Florida Arts Council for the last 4+ years and I can't WAIT to leave. I'm so tired of sitting in front of a computer all day, dealing with silly artists and administrators.
Nursing has been something I've considered doing since high school, but for various reasons, I never went after it. Last summer I made the decision to go back to school and get my nursing degree. Had to take 30 hours of pre-reqs and now I'm starting nursing school August 25th.
Meteorologist for 4 years, then systems engineering for 6 years. Most people think I'm nuts for going back to school because my last job was out of a "virtual office". Yep...I worked in my living room with email, a phone and a laptop everyday -- and made about three times the money I'll make as a starting nurse. But that bug bit me HARD!! :) Despite being slammed with finals this week, I'm happier than I've ever been in my life.

Thanks Agent.. :)
I'm so glad to hear your family is supportive of your decision - having a family who's behind you is WONDERFUL! (I'm blessed with one myself.. thus the reason I won't be moving out of this area for school!) :)
Maybe as you (me too) get further into school even those fleeting moments will disappear! LOL
ROFL!
