Foreign RN Failing Nclex - Study Tips Needed

Published

Hello Allnurses Readers,

First of all, let me give everyone a brief overview before I get into the topic above. I'm a foreign RN with licensure in two other Countries (Malaysia and Singapore). I graduated school Top of my class and even went as far as being one of the National Board's Top Scorer for my year. I have been serving in the OR since and never looked back.

I recently moved over to the states to be with my husband and wished to pursue my career. Of course, I have to take the NCLEX. Studied for 4 months on end and failed twice. Imagine that feeling when I've always done so well before.

I summed it to my poor prioritizing skills when it comes to questions and the difference in topics anointed important here compared to where I used to be. I'm ready to pass this test and continue working. This has been straining to my wallet and self esteem.

I would greatly appreciate Nclex Tips by fellow test takers and important notes I should focus on. Would love to hear from everyone and get in a discussion. If anyone is willing to tutor me on ways to answer questions, that would be great too!

Have a good day and god bless.

UWorld is the best and a must! Their rationales are very clear and detailed and you learn how to critically think. You can also try combining it with Hurst,Lacharity, and you tube videos. Many have used at least one or a combo of these to pass. You need to learn how to relax the mind and be confident! If you have anxiety take care of that first. I am going in for my 4th attempt and trust me I am ready to move on as well!

@a2012 BSN what are you using to study our situation seems to be similar.

Thank you very much! I will definitely look into this.

I used Kaplan online, their review Books, Lippincott Reviews and over 1500 questions so far. No luck!

First test felt felt like a fluke, the questions seems to be on topic that are widely neglected and my second test was better but a lot of SATA and prioritizing questions.

Hi! I sent you a message :)

Hey there, I'm a new member here so I'm not allowed access to the messages yet. Maybe an email?

This has got to be a tough situation. US Nursing scope of practice is focused on patient reactions to illness... which is heavily influenced by culture. Our educational process is designed to produce generalists who can work in any setting - with no specialization until graduate school. Even basic role expectations in regard to working with physicians & other clinical providers is different also. I'm definitely in awe of international nurses who have to basically re-tool themselves in order to get past NCLEX.

Wishing you all the best. Keep us posted on your progress.

Thank you you very much! Nothing is wrong with prioritizing patients reactions to illnesses but I've seen some questions that's push asides bedside manners for objective reality in the setting a patient is in. I agree being truthful is an absolute necessity but so is bedside manners. I think most Foreign Nurses scope of practice begins with Care of Patience and Bedside Integrity before the scope prioritise here. I'm still learning to adjust to accepting and utilising both ways of practice which would definitely make me a better nurse in general.

I'm very sure I have my materials down, the art of answering questions may be something I need to improve. Thank you for the well wishes and input.

Will update everyone on my situation.
