I graduated in 2010 in PI. Took the NCLEX California Exams in 2011, failed. Then I reapplied in 2012 and got denied. Now they were asking me to take OB and Med-Surg course so I can re-apply for the exams.
To my fellow Pinoy nurses, what would be the best thing to do to fulfill my dream to become a US Nurse? Which state would still allow foreign grads to take NLCEX exams without retaking some course?
How much will the tuition fee be for OB and MedSurg courses in California?
I have been working so hard to raise my family and I realized that I can not just give up my dream to become an RN. I badly need some help. Thank you!
hi, we're on the same boat. i just passed my nclex pn but still want to persue my dream to be a RN here in california. i applied & received my eligibility from NY but haven't taken the test yet, my husband don't want to move out of state.
finding a university is difficult here in bay area, & tution fee is very expensive, i also don't drive. i felt i devastated when BON denied my retake application. i wish there was an exemption, like example: the concurrent wasn't applied to those who applied & already had received eligibility before they started implementing it, or as long as it's bot fraud.
what's ur plan now?

There was an exemption of sorts, it applied to the PH applicants prior or on the 2005 graduation year. For sure, we've seen those that graduated in 2004, had no problems with either getting the ATT for the first-time or able to get the endorsement approved.
There have been a few in the 2005 graduation who passed thru the CA BRN and there's been those that got declined for being a 2005 grad and faced the same concurrency rules. Again, remember the actual regulations have always been in place since 1987 and as such, can be enforced at any time without prior notice.
If you were recently denied the ATT and are WITHIN one year of the declination date, you can file a request for the appeals process. If, however, you passed the one year to file for the process, then, you already waived your rights to the appeal and no longer eligible. You may try to but don't expect the letter to allow you to proceed.
If you feel, that you truly did not take the clinicals and the theories in the same exact semester
period, not 1-2 weeks before and not months before or after and certainly not a year or two later, then, the appeals board would stick to their original decision of declination. Been approved the first or second time prior to the Nov. 2011 strict enforcement of the concurrency rules will have no bearings on present applications, since the requirements have changed.
Yes, you could re-apply again but you will be starting over from square one and have to meet any new or enforcement rules should the CA BRN do so at any time.
Always remember that getting an RN license (as in any other state and like a driver's license) or any other type of license, that it's a privilege and not a right. Privileges that can be taken away even if one day, they say no one with green and purple hair will be allowed a license or can be revoked or suspended.
Hi, I am planning on taking the MS & OB courses but I need to find a school here in Los Angeles area. I might apply for the LVN exams also. For the record, I am an American citizen and I have a PH RN license. Does anyone know which schools have the shortest Waiting list?
When did you apply for the CA ATT?
Since you are focusing on the LA area, you can simply print out the CA BRN approved list of nursing schools and call and e-mail each and every one of them that are closest to you.
What happens a lot of times by the time, someone posts a school, many others will also flock to that school and flood them with applications and inquiries so your chances to get enrolled drops your name behind the list.
The short-listed ones you are looking for are usually the most expensive schools (up-front tuition of upwards to $14,000 plus) with no wait or not much of a wait list. The cheaper schools are usually with the longest waiting list, up to a couple of years or more.
It seems like most schools mentioned here in other threads tend to be not located in the LA area but more so in the outside locations or more in Northern CA.

Hi! I just want to share with you my experience recently. I applied for the NCLEX RN here in CA last September, they asked for the Med Surg/ OB cases and my school's academic calendar. I have requested and asked for my cases from my school but they kept saying that they do not have it anymore that the school got flooded blah blah! so its a hopeless case.
But I wrote to my school (AGAIN) and submitted a copy of the CA BRN letter asking for the said requirements. And by some miracle i got a letter from CA BRN last monday approving me to take the NCLEX RN. Did the BRN requested for your school's academic calendar????

hi, what year did u graduate & are u from the philippines?
Yes, they did. I reapplied back in 2012. Congratulations and good luck on the exams!
Have you checked with the CA BRN if you still a valid and open application if you applied in 2012, since the 3 year limitation would have expired?
Unless you didn't get the first denial notice letter in 2013, but then, you'll need to complete them real quick and get those transcripts sent over before your application is considered abandoned, based on the month and year.
I know others that tried to get into schools but were turned down, if the school counselor or admissions person sees that your CA BRN letter is beyond the 3 year expiration date and will not allow to be put on a wait list or a chance to enroll, giving the priority to those who are still within the 3rd year period.
CA BRN figures that 36 months of looking for an available school and to re-take is more than enough time to get into an approved school but we all know that's not true with the limited schools actually offering the deficient courses and the ones that do have them, the actual open spots are even more limited.
As it's not only the applicants from PH but from all over the globe, as others reporting seeing students from China, India, UK, Russia, Canada etc.

If TX does pass H.B. 4063, it will be their version of CA's AB 60 and have to address these issues and probably be very much the same.
