Foreign BSN grad with Med Surg/OB deficiencies got approved for the NCLEX-RN

Published

Hello to all! My name is Inna and I am a BSN graduate from the Philippines Batch 2006 (i know that's soo long ago :D). Anyways, right after I graduated I moved here in California to pursue a nursing career (as planned!). Long story short I took the exam not once, not twice but 6 times!!!!! I kinda felt stupid and hopeless that I'm never ever going to pass this test. On my 6th attempt I decided to challenge the LVN exam and that one i passed on the first time. I started working as an LVN for a few years then i decided to take the NCLEX RN again and this was at 2013. This was the time that CA BRN became more strict with the requirements and they ended up asking me for my MED SURG/ OB GYN cases and i dont have my cases saved on my e-mail or anywhere. Ill be stuck working as an LVN for the rest of my life and i didnt really want to go back to school to start all over again when I already have my BSN that I studied for 4 years!!!

So last year i decided to apply again, i submitted everything that the BRN required but still they ended up asking me again for my cases and my schools academic calendar from 2002-2006. Im losing hope, Ive been working as an LVN for almost 9 years and really wanted to work as an RN, on what i really studied for. But i didnt give up! I wrote to my school, gave them the copy of the letter from BRN and hoping that my school will submit all the documents that were requested (my father was the one handling all of the transactions since I live here in california).

I waited and waited, looked and applied for schools that offer courses for my defeciencies. Until yesterday, I got a letter from the BRN and in my head im like what do they need now. So I opened it, read it and I almost fainted!!!!!! BRN approved my application to take the NCLEX-RN!!! for some miracle they did approve my application!! I was reading the letter over and over again just to make sure they didnt send it by mistake. LOL :)) I was calling everyone (as if i already passed lol) because im soo happy and excited for this wonderful news! I started calling my batchmates from college (who were having the same problem) and told them to apply, also to make sure that they have all their requirements ready.

Im just sharing my story to give hope to others that are in the same situation as me, there are ways to solve this problem and you wont know until you try it yourself. I thank the Lord for this miracle and also by giving me this chance to better my career as a Nurse I hope this article will help others on their journey. :)

you have to re-sumbit all the requirements if your BRN application has expired already. Mine expired 2013 so i have to re-start the application process. I know it'll be a lot of back and forth with your school and the BRN but just be patient about it, hopefullt at the end it'll be worth it. ;)

isn't that it's two years for the paperworks in BRN before it expired right? i was wondering..because what read on the BRN site before it takes two years before they will abandoned you're credentials.

in my case the last time i took my nclex exam was 2013 when i didn't passed, i applied 2014 for reapplication and they send same year 2014 they send me a letter stating i need to send for requirements or paperworks that has my cases and academic calendar. my school send all of that and yet i got a letter on 2015 that i need to take sa med/surg and ob gyn class.

i'm still looking for more options i have.

It's three years from the initial application date, it t should state that in your letter that determines your abandonment date/year or simply use the first declination letter's date/year and move that year plus 2 (makes the total three year abandonment month/year). In your case, you stated you started in 2014 and received the declination letter in 2014, but what month? Just for the sake of argument, you applied in Feb. 2014, got the first notice declined letter dated July, 2014, then you have till Feb. 2017, to complete your application.

This means you need to have turned in the official CA school transcripts on or before Feb. 2017, if not, then the CA BRN will automatically abandon the application. There's thousands upon thousands of applications and if you don't take a pro-active stance to let the CA BRN you're still alive and still interested in having them evaluate your application, you need to do whatever is necessary to complete the requirements.

It's your job and sole responsibility to keep the CA BRN evaluator informed. They will not accept any letter or school information that you are enrolled since there's always the chance that the applicant may fail the course, may not complete the entire course, so that's why they need to receive in a timely manner, the actual hard copy of the completion (transcripts) of the deficient courses.

The option you did have but based on your time line, you waived your right to have your application go thru the appeals process. The CA BRN gives you up to one whole year to appeal from the date of first declination letter. You must file for the appeal and you better have some very good reasons why you think you meet the concurrency rules, meaning you'll need to produce certifed copies of your courses and cases and their respective dates that you're right and the analyst was incorrect. Once you pass the first year to appeal, then you're no longer eligible to argue your case.

Then your other only option is to have your school submit the documents as requested by the CA BRN and hope that your transcripts is going to pass the concurrency rules. A letter from your Dean claiming that your courses are in compliance with the concurrency has not worked for anyone. So what's needed are the transcripts.

Do you know if you truly did ALL your theories and clinicals ALL in the same semester, ALL within the SAME dates and not 1-2 weeks before or after, not 1-2 months or 1-2 years before or after? If you know for sure 105% then your school should have the exact concurrent dates and you should be fine and able to get the ATT. But if you don't think you did, then, you will not meet the concurrency rules.

Don't forget everyone's transcripts are always going to be reviewed by a case-by-case basis. So just because a batchmate got the ATT and someone else didn't, then there's a good chance, the one who didn't get the ATT was because they were off by one date, one week or simply not concurrent.

thank you for the information. i know my school sent all the cases and academic calendar to the CA BRN when they sent me the first letter on 2014. then i got that second letter on 2015 stating i needed to go back to school and i needed to take the med/surg and ob gyn class.

i've been contacting some school here in CA. most of them don't accept my case or their already full. and most of the time they'll put you on waiting list.

send a copy of that letter to your school, ask if they can provide it, also ask if they have a fee for that certain document and that you will pay as required by the school.

its gonna be a lot of back and forth from you, the BRN and your school you just have to communicate with them. I know it might cause so much delay on your application but at least you're trying and something good might come out of it. ;) just keep trying and don't give up!

Im praying that you guys will get your eligibility soon! :)

haha I should also do that when the time comes. Am still in the process of gathering my requirements before I send them all to CA BRN. Am also a 2006 graduate back in PHL. I do hope that I will not have any deficiencies as well.

Am so happy for you and goodluck on your exam.

hi guys,

i graduated year 2005 in the phils, immigrated last 2008. i took cali nclex rn 3x (2008,2009,nov 2012) but failed. i reapplied dec 2012 & send additional requirements (cases) & by sept 2013 i received the letter from brn that i need to retake ms/ob, febuary 2014 i send a letter of reconsideration to my analys back then (*******) but i never received a response from her. it's difficult to get into the program as everyone here are all aware about that & at the same time financial matters is also an issue. i passed my lvn recently january 2016 & i'm working for kaiser hospital as cna equivalent. the 3yrs window to complete the said defficiency will expire next month, i called brn & i was told that as long as it's not yet expired i can reapply & pay the $150 fee & they will give me extension for another 3yrs which i followed the instructions and i also wrote a letter of reconsideration (waiting for the response) & i also found out that i have a new analyst (**********.

i heard a lot of stories with people applied from the beginning (getting all the school requirements from the start) & some aren't lucky to get approve & some got even worst outcome having them redo the whole nursing program.

i'm very anxious while waiting for ****** response
