I am a nursing student in Memphis finishing my first semester, and many students (myself included) are in the process of applying to nurse extern positions now. I was just wondering if other student extern's (current or former) would be willing to share their experiences. There seems to be a lack of information regarding the programs available in Memphis hospitals, and it seems our fellow older students are either tight-lipped or too busy to answer questions! [Not to mention the professors tend to have their opinions of each hospital already set in stone...:uhoh21:] Any information would be appreciated, and I'll be sure to pass your opinions on to my peers.

3) How would you rate your experiences there? (Actual work, extern program management, nurses you worked with, ratios, duties, etc).

Yes, they are right there are lots of new grads and lots of people moving from techs to interns etc. I can give you the name of the nurse recruiter I spoke with from Baptist if you like, send me a PM if you'd like it. Also, I don't know which you would qualify for, but by going to baptistnurses.org you can see whats available. type in intern or tech

Does anyone know much about student positions at the VA Medical Center? Is the pay similar/more/less than other student positions in area hospitals? Hours? Flexibility? Experience gained? If anyone knows anything, I'd appreciate some info.
I saw earlier in the thread someone mention Saint Francis to you. Did you apply there or speak to anyone? I will be glad to send the name and number of the recruiter I spoke to your way if you'd like. They were so awesome to me. I took a job (RN) there yesterday and they were so quick about everything and the nicest people I have met in my job search. I applied last week, went for an interview yesterday morning, and was hired yesterday afternoon. I'd DEFINITELY recommend them if you haven't tried there already. :)

I applied for a job about a week ago also at St. Francis (student position), but I just went through their website. I haven't heard anything from them, but I'm not surprised. Seems like you have to talk to a recruiter or have an "In" to get anywhere. If you can send me the info via PM that would be great, though! I still need a job, especially over the summer. I am about to resort to the mall if I can't find a nursing job.....yucky!
We have an extern on our floor that works once in a blue moon. I think I noticed on the schedule last week she was only down a couple times a month. I'm thinking most places would probably work with your school schedule. :)
oh, cool! thanks. i am going to start nursing school in the spring. i am so excited because i will be done with education requirements and pre reqs and just be doing something that i would love. even though, it will be my first semester; i still like knowing information for future reference.
I goto school in NW TN and am hoping to start nurse externing in Jackson during the summer. Currently a junior in a BSN program. Any of you ever worked/considered working there? Trying to get information from their nurse recruiter is like pulling teeth.
